Queen Bees Begin Defense of MCC Title With Victory by: Ryan Holtmann Sports Information 1/13/2003 12:43 p.m. Despite trailing 29-28 at halftime, the St. Ambrose Queen Bees (11-10, 1-0) climbed above the .500 mark with a 75-57 victory over the Mt. St. Clare Mounties (6-12, 0-1). Angie Schinstock had a career high 35 points in the victory in the Queen Bees victory. She also grabbed 16 rebounds to record another double-double. Something that she is becoming accustomed too. Matter of fact, this is the 11th time this season that she has accomplished that feat. Schinstock also came away with fours in every other statistical category. She accumulated four assists, four blocks, four steals and four turnovers. Kellie Metz also added 15 points as the only other Queen Bees player in double figures. The Queen Bees did receive a scare in the first half, after jumping out to a ten point lead, the Mounties fought back in the closing minutes of the first half, and took a one point lead going into halftime. "We weren't playing for them to respond to us, in the second half we made them respond to us," Schinstock said. "Everyone on the team made adjustments at halftime, we changed our intensity and picked it up. We got our stuff together." Respond they did, outscoring the Mounties 46-28 in the second half on 52.8% shooting and limiting their opponents to 37.0% shooting in the second half. Defense was the key for the Queen Bees as they held the height advantage down low and in the paint. Their nine blocks to the Mounties zero played a key role to in the teams victory. Other than Schinstock, Michelle Kurth also came away with four of those blocks with Ali Rorah swatting the other. Leading the Mounties were Linissa Bowman who had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Alicia Mahmens added 11 points and eight assists. But it would prove to not be enough to overcome the Queen Bees. The Queen Bees will now travel to Oskaloosa, IA, to face off against MCC foe William Penn in the first game of the women's/men's doubleheader tipping off at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game following at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will return home on Saturday to face Grand View College. The women's game tips off at 1:00 p.m. and the men's game at 3:00 p.m.
