Queen Bees Drop Second Straight

The Queen Bees made the journey to Bourbonnais, IL, to face off against a tough Olivet Nazarene team at McHie Arena, only to travel home with a sour taste in their mouth.  The No. 16 St. Ambrose Queen Bees (1-2) fell to the Tigers (2-0) 79-73 in overtime.

Late in the second half and the Queen Bees trailing 68-65, Coach Ted Eskildsen called a timeout to set up one play to try and force overtime.  The play was set up for Brooke Vallejo.  Vallejo who finished the night with eight points took a few dribbles and put up a three at the buzzer. The shot would fall and it would look as if the Queen Bees would take the momentum into overtime.

Despite being down eight points (34-26) at halftime, the Queen Bees battled back in the second half on 48.4% shooting and outscored Olivet Nazarene 42-34.

The shooting would not carry over to the overtime period though, as the Queen Bees would shoot 1-for-8 (12.5%) in the extra period.  They were outscored by a margin of 11-5.

Leading the way for the Queen Bees was Angie Schinstock, who finished with a double-double before fouling out.  Schinstock scored 19 points and grabbed 12 of the teams 31 rebounds.

The only other player to score in double digits was sophomore Michelle Kurth.  Kurth dropped in 12 points in 23 minutes of work.

Kate Tuttle and Kellie Metz both struggled from the field. Metz going 0-6 from the field, still managed seven points as she went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.  Metz did have six assists.  Tuttle scored eight points, making 2 of 10 shots and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.  Tuttle fouled out as well.

Ali Rorah scored the first points of her collegiate career and finished the game with those same two points in eight minutes of action.

The Queen Bees were outrebounded 47-31 on the night, with Olivet Nazarene coming away with 19 offensive rebounds to the Queen Bees eight.

"We showed a lot of character in a tough situation and in the long run that is going to make us better," Eskildsen said of the performance.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Lanita Thomas. Thomas went 6-for-10 from the field, scoring 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds along the way.

Three other players scored in double digits for the Tigers.  Stacey Maurer scored 13 points and Niki Disch and Erica Martin both scored ten points. Disch also came away with seven rebounds.

Keaton Brumm grabbed eight rebounds and five points in her 38 minutes of service.  Every Tiger player saw at least 11 minutes of action.

The Queen Bees will travel to Lamoni, IA, to face off against Graceland on Saturday.  The game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.  They will then make the usual trip across the state of Iowa and into Hastings, NE, for the annual Hastings Tournament which is being held November 14-16 this year.

On November 23rd the Queen Bees travel to UW-Platteville for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.  They will return home on Monday, November 25th to face the Trojans of Trinity International.  The game at Lee Lohman Arena will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
