Queen Bees Swated by Vikings
As the old saying goes, "the third
time is a charm," did not apply on Monday night, as the Queen Bees
were ousted from the tournament by the Grand View Vikings, 86-71. The loss
ended the Queen Bees season, as they finished with a 21-14 record and a
second place finish in the MCC.
The Vikings were propelled by a quick
start and never trailed at any time during the game. The Queen Bees were
down 8-2 early, but withstood the early momentum to cut the lead to 10-8.
The two point deficit would be as close as the Queen Bees would come to
their hopes of a national tournament appearance.
Jessica Maston was a thorn in the side
of the Queen Bees all night, as she lead the Vikings with 13 first half
points. A deficit of 16-13, would balloon to 29-19, as the Vikings were
clicking on all cylinders. This was a hole that the Queen Bees could not
dig themselves out off.
Down 38-27 with 3:34 remaining in the
first half, the Queen Bees would run out of gas and the Vikings ended the
half on a 12-4 run to take a 50-31 lead at the break.
Angie Schinstock and Kate Tuttle each
had 9 points at halftime to keep the Queen Bees in the game.
A Carrie Lowry 3-pointer early in the
second half expanded the Viking lead to 26. The Queen Bees went the rest
of the game trying to chip the lead, as they cut it down to 12 with 10:16
remaining with a Kellie Metz 3-pointer.
Three minutes later, Angie Schinstock
converted two free throws to get the lead down to 9, but this was as close
as they would get, as the Vikings turned it on with a 10-4 run of their
own to go up by 16.
Senior, Kate Tuttle, would score her
last point as a Queen Bee on a free throw with 2:31 remaining to make it
an 81-66 game, as the Vikings closed it out 86-71.
All-conference player of the year,
Carrie Lowry, had a monster game, as she posted 10 points to go along with
15 assists. Jessica Maston could not be stopped inside, as she finished
the game with 29 points on 12-for-15 shooting. Five Vikings finished in
double figures, as the team shot 48% from the field.
Angie Schinstock finished the season
with her 17th double-double, by scoring 21 points and grabbing 15
rebounds. Tuttle had a rough shooting night (4-for-20), but finished with
15 points and Kellie Metz continued her strong play with 17.
The Queen Bees finish the year at 21-14
and will look forward to the 2003-04 season. The Queen Bees will lose
all-conference guard and leader, Kate Tuttle, but will retain the rest of
the roster.
