William Penn Stuns Queen Bees
The Lady Statesmen (9-13, 4-3) were
looking for revenge Saturday afternoon, as they avenged their earlier
season loss to the Queen Bees (16-12, 6-2) with a 65-62 victory. Despite
having a sub-par season, the Lady Statesmen and center, Kim Morrill, were
too much to handle.
The Queen Bees could not get anything
going on the offensive end, as they shot only 35% from the field, compared
to 51% for the Lady Statesmen.
The Queen Bees started the game with a
13-8 run, capped by a 3-point field goal by Kerri Alvine, with 12:48
remaining. The Lady Statesmen then turned to Kim Morrill, who scored 12 of
her 19 points in the first half, leading William Penn to a 27-26 halftime
lead.
The Queen Bees jumped out to a 30-29
lead in the second half, as Kate Tuttle got a steal and converted on a
lay-up. The one-point lead was the last time St. Ambrose would be ahead,
as the Lady Statesmen opened the gap to as many as 8 points with 4:38
left.
Kate Tuttle gave her all to bring the
Queen Bees back, but just could not overcome the deficit. St. Ambrose was
down 65-62 with 6.1 seconds left and had the ball, but a Kate Tuttle
3-point attempt fell short, giving the Queen Bees their second conference
defeat.
Tuttle led all scorers with 22 points
and Angie Schinstock collected her 14th double-double on the season,
scoring 12 points with 13 rebounds. Schinstock also broke the school
record for free-throws made in one season with 168, beating the previous
record of 167.
Four Lady Statesmen finished in
double-figures, with Morrill leading the way with 19 points. Christine
Weingart posted a double-double scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds,
Kristina McNew added 13 and Hannah Lee chipped in 10 points.
Next up for the Queen Bees will be the
Viterbo V-Hawks. The Queen Bees defeated the V-Hawks in their first
match-up of the season 81-60. The game is Wednesday night in LaCrosse, WI
at 7:30.
