Queen Bees survive scare

The St. Ambrose Queen Bees were pushed to the limit in the opening round of the MCC Tournament. The Bees advanced to the second round by squeeking out an 86-80 victory over Franciscan.

The Queen Bees were led by Senior Angie Schinstock, who had 32 points and tallied her 2,000th career point, Jennifer Goetz, who recorded a career high 26 points and senior Kellie Metz who scored 20 points. The three women accounted for 76 of the team's 86 points (88%).

Franciscan got out of the gate with a quick 7-0 lead, before Schinstock brought the Bees back by scoring their first nine points to cut the deficit to two. The Bees finally grabbed the lead at the 10:37 mark following a Metz 3-pointer. Schinstock converted on her 2,000th career point after converting on a 3-point play to give the Bees a 38-34 halftime lead.

The Queen Bees came out with on a 17-7 run in the first four minutes of the second half to give themselves a 14-point cushion. Franciscan was able to get the lead under double figures when Breanna Monaghan converted on a basket to cut the lead to eight with 7:55 left. The Saints then went on to score the next five points to cut the lead to three with 6:21 remaining.

Franciscan eventually trimmed the lead down to a mere one point with 1:49 remaining following a Leslie Belitz 3-pointer, but freshman Jennifer Goetz came up huge in the clutch scoring the next six Bee points to extend the lead to four with :48 left. Franciscan's Monaghan came right back to trim the lead to one with only :23 left.

Senior Kellie Metz knocked down two free throws to give the Bees a three point advantage and the Bees would ice the game with a Goetz steal.

St. Ambrose will move on to the second round to play Grand View on Saturday at 2 pm.
