St. Ambrose Loses A Wild One

Box Score

The St. Ambrose women's basketball team showed a lot of heart Saturday night, but it was not enough as they lost their first game at home all season, 82-79 in overtime to McKendree College.  It was a tight contest throughout with both teams giving their all for the full 45 minutes.  SAU (6-4) fell behind by eight points early in the second half, but went on a 10-0 run to get back in the game.  After that, the lead was never more than four points by either side.  With eleven seconds to go in regulation, and McKendree (6-2) up by three, Sophomore Jennifer Goetz rose to the occasion and nailed a three pointer to send it to overtime.  In the extra frame, McKendree outscored the Queen Bees 13-10.  St. Ambrose had one final chance to send it into a second overtime, but Goetz's desperation 30 footer fell short of the basket.

Goetz led the Queen Bees with a double double of 23 points and 12 rebounds, all while being tightly guarded the entire game.  Junior Ali Rorah hit a couple of big shots late, and finished with ten points and seven rebounds.  Junior Jodi Wulff was the only other Queen Bee in double figures, as she finished with twelve points.

McKendree had a couple outstanding individual performances that helped them earn the 'W'.  The were led by Emily Hart, who scored a game high 28 points, while grabbing nine rebounds.  Alli Arppe finished with 19 points for the Bearcats, while pulling down 13 boards.  Natalie Bess also scored in double figures with 17.  The Bearcats distributed the ball very well, recording 27 assists in the game.  Ten of those came from Katie Hasheider, while her sister Kelly Hasheider recorded nine.

SAU doesn't have much time to rest before their back on the court.  They'll play another intensity filled game on Tuesday, as they'll travel just across the river to take on arch-rival Augustana.  That game will begin at 7:30 in Rock Island.
