Queen Bees Lose Heartbreaker in Double OT

Box Score  1/23/05

DAVENPORT, IA- Saint Ambrose was in control for most of Sunday's game, but could not close it out down the stretch, losing to Mount Mercy 75-69 in two overtimes.  The Queen Bees (13-11, 3-3) were up by seven points with just over one minute remaining, but the Mustangs (10-14, 4-2) hit a free throw and two clutch threes in the final minute to send it to overtime.  SAU never trailed in the first OT, but during the second extra frame, Mount Mercy pulled ahead and hit some clutch free throws to win the game.

The Queen Bees, who shot just 31% from the field, were led by Cathy Mangan, who had one of her best games of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while wreaking havoc on the defensive end with seven steals.  Jennifer Goetz also scored 18 points, despite being double and triple teamed for much of the game.  Goetz also added 19 rebounds and three blocked shots.  Michelle Kurth scored eight and tied a school record with seven blocks.

Mount Mercy was led by a tremendous performance by Marci Clayton, who scored 34 points and pulled down fifteen rebounds.  Clayton also added four assists and four steals, including a critical one late in the game that set up a three pointer.  Dani Anderson added twelve points for the Mustangs, while Katie Smith chipped in with ten and twelve rebounds.

St. Ambrose will be back in action Wednesday night in Mt. Pleasant, IA, as they'll face Iowa Wesleyan.  Tip-off is set for 5:30.
