Queen Bees Hold Off Lady Pioneers

Box Score

The St. Ambrose women's basketball team earned a hard fought victory Tuesday night as they defeated the University of Platteville Tuesday night, 67-59.  That marks the second consecutive win by the Queen Bees after losing three straight.

With the SAU lead cut to just four points with 2:41 to play in the contest, Sophomore Jennifer Goetz stepped up and put the team on her back.  Goetz scored six of the last ten points in the game, including an important three point play at that crucial time in the game.  She finished the game with 19 points and 6 rebounds for St. Ambrose (5-3).

Sophomore Cathy Mangan and Senior Michelle Kurth were the other Queen Bees to score in double figures.  Mangan finished with a team high 20 points, while Kurth recorded a double double of eleven points and ten rebounds.  Kurth also added five blocked shots on the night, which moves her into second place in school history with 107 career blocks.

The Pioneers (0-1) stayed in the game by way of the offensive glass, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds.  They shot just 30% from the floor, which is a big differential from SAU's 57% shooting.  Holly Kaiser led UW-P with 20 points and seven rebounds.  Shannon Boatman and Lisa Wubben also scored in double digits, scoring 14 and 11 respectively.

SAU will be back in action this weekend, as they'll host the 2004 River Cities Classic.  The first games will start at 2:00 on Saturday, with Sunday's action beginning at 2:00 as well.
