2/23/06 - Ashford (7-21, 3-11) at SAU (19-10, 9-5) - MCC Quarterfinals
Series History: St. Ambrose leads
the all-time series 33-2. The Queen Bees have won the last 13 meetings
against the Lady Saints.
Last meeting: SAU won the last match-up between these two teams
71-45 earlier this season. SAU shot 61% in the first half, as they never
trailed all day. Jennifer Goetz led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-8
shooting, to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Cathy Mangan
finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Jena Zientek
chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Ashford was led by Jakki
Alexander’s 13 point, six rebound performance off the bench. Charity
Turnbull added 11 points for the Lady Saints, to go along with six
assists.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU lost their second consecutive game
Saturday, losing 66-57 to Mount Mercy. SAU shot just 29% in the second
half, while the Lady Mustangs scorched the nets to the tune of 71% in the
second frame. Ali Rorah led SAU with 13 points and nine rebounds, while
Goetz finished with 12 points and 12 boards. Ashlie Maher added nine
points in her first start of the season.
Looking Ahead: If SAU wins tonight, they will host a semi-final
game on Saturday against the winner of tonight’s Waldorf at Grand View
game. That match-up will begin at 2:00. The Queen Bees swept Waldorf this
year, while splitting with Grand View.
Maher Tickles the Twine: SAU’s
Ashlie Maher has been one of the most consistent players the Queen Bees
have had lately. The Junior guard has made at least one 3-pointer in each
of her last eight games. Maher has connected on 41.9% (18-43) of her shots
from downtown in that span.
Points Hard To Come By: Ashford has struggled to put points on the
board at times this season, ranking last in scoring in the MCC, averaging
56.9 ppg. Things won’t get any easier for the Lady Saints, as SAU is first
in the MCC and 10th in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 57
ppg.
Heaven Is a Playground: The Lady Saints seem to bring the best out
of Jennifer Goetz. SAU’s junior forward is averaging 23.6 points and 9.3
rebounds per game for her career against Ashford. The Queen Bees are 7-0
with Goetz when they play the Lady Saints.
Miller Time: Ashford has won three of their last six games after
dropping their first eight conference games to start the year. A big
reason for their recent turnaround is the play of Lindsey Miller. The
junior center is averaging 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in those
six games.
Going The Distance: Ashford has given fans their money’s worth this
season. The Lady Saints have played five overtime games this year,
including one triple overtime thriller. They have won two of the five, all
of which have come during the MCC season.
