1/28/06 - SAU (15-7, 5-2) at Viterbo (9-14, 3-4)
Series History: SAU leads the
all-time series 25-7. The Lady V-Hawks have won two of the last three
meetings.
Last meeting: The Queen Bees won the last meeting 52-39 earlier
this season. Jennifer Goetz recorded a team-high 14 points and seven
rebounds. Jena Zientek scored 10 on five of seven shooting. Cathy Mangan
set the tone defensively with six steals in the first half. Mangan also
finished with eight points and five rebounds. The Queen Bee defense keyed
on MCC leading scorer Anne Wilson, who scored 14 points on 5-of-20
shooting.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU suffered a heartbreaking 67-63 loss to
Iowa Wesleyan in overtime, giving the Lady Tigers sole possesion of first
place in the MCC. Goetz finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and six
assists. Mangan had another great all-around game, collecting 12 points,
seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Jody Wulff chipped in with
11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Close Calls: When the game is close at the end, Viterbo has ice
water in their veins. The Lady V-Hawks are 3-0 in overtime games this
season. Two of their three conference wins this season have gone to an
extra period, with Viterbo coming out on top each time. SAU, on the other
hand, is 0-1 in overtime games after dropping their last game in an extra
period.
Head of the Class: Saturday’s game features the top two scorers in
the Midwest Classic Conference. Viterbo’s Anne Wilson leads the MCC,
averaging 19.7 points per game. SAU’s Jennifer Goetz ranks second, scoring
17.3 ppg. Both Wilson and Goetz are also atop the leaders in rebounds per
game. Wilson ranks first, averaging 9.4 rpg, while Goetz is second with
8.7 rpg.
Breitach Heats Up: SAU freshman Casey Breitbach began the season
like gangbusters. After a mid-season slump, the sharpshooter appears to be
reverting back to form. Breitbach has shot 44% (4-9) from three-point
range during SAU’s last three games.
Grand Theft: SAU’s defense has been a big reason for the Queen Bees
great start to the season. The reason their defense is so successful is
due to their ball pressure. SAU is second in the conference in steals,
swiping the ball 10.3 times per game. They also have two players in the
top 10 in the category. Cathy Mangan ranks second with 2.2 spg, while Jill
Sweeney is 10th with 1.5 spg.
Big Difference: St. Ambrose and Viterbo are like night and day when
it comes to rebounding. The Queen Bees lead the MCC in rebounding margin,
grabbing 5.1 rpg more than their opponents. Viterbo on the other hand
ranks last in the conference in that same category. The Lady V-Hawks are
getting out rebounded by 5.7 boards per game this year.
