2/4/06 - Ashford (5-18, 1-8) at SAU (16-8, 6-3)
Series History: St. Ambrose leads
the all-time series 32-2. The Queen Bees have won the last eleven meetings
between these two teams.
Last meeting: St. Ambrose won the last meeting, 72-58, earlier this
season in Clinton, Iowa. SAU’s Jennifer Goetz scored a career high 31
points on 10 of 15 shooting, while also pulling down eight rebounds. Cathy
Mangan added seven points, five rebounds, seven assists, and five steals
for SAU. Ashford was led by Jakki Alexander’s 15 points and eight rebounds
off the bench. Megan Van Hyfte scored 13 points for the Lady Saints.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU shot 32% from the floor Wednesday, as they
lost 56-50 at William Penn. Goetz recorded team highs of 14 points and 11
rebounds, while Jena Zientek chipped in with 11 points and seven boards in
the losing effort. SAU also shot just 52% (11-21) from the free throw
line.
Looking Ahead: SAU will remain at home for their next game, when
Grand View will visit Lee Lohman Arena on Wednesday, in a rematch of the
Lady Vikings’ 53-44 win earlier this year.
Bench Steps Up: The Queen Bees have been receiving excellent play
from their reserves lately. SAU’s bench players have scored 32% of the
team’s points over the course of the last four games, none bigger than
Ashlie Maher, who’s averaging 7.3 points in the last three contests off
the bench.
Goetz Moves Up Career Ranks: SAU
junior Jennifer Goetz continues to move up several SAU career rankings.
After scoring 14 points Wednesday against William Penn, Goetz now has
1,409 points in her SAU career. She now needs just 19 points to move into
eighth place on the school’s all-time scoring list. Goetz is also 103
rebounds away from moving into fifth place on the school’s all-time
rebounding list. Goetz has 816 rebounds in her 2+ years at SAU.
Mangan Does It All: Junior guard Cathy Mangan has excelled in all
aspects of her game recently. In her last three games, Mangan is averaging
10 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.3 steals.
Drive For 65: SAU’s defense has shut down opposing offenses so well
that the Queen Bees are tough to beat when they put up a decent amount of
points. SAU is 10-0 this season when they’ve scored at least 65 points.
They are 6-8 when they’ve scored under 65.
Long Wait: Ashford waited until the second half of the conference
season, but they finally recorded their first conference win of the season
in their last game, an 80-66 overtime upset victory over Viterbo. That win
also snapped the Lady Saint’s 10 game losing streak.
Turnbull Dishes It Out: Ashford’s Charity Turnbull has played ball
recently just as her first name implies. Turnbull has been very generous
to her teammates lately, averaging 7.2 assists in her last five games.
