12/6/05 Culver-Stockton (2-6) at SAU (7-1)
Series History: St. Ambrose leads the all-time series 10-4. SAU
has won four of the last five meetings between the two schools.
Last meeting: SAU won the last matchup between these two teams,
67-58 in overtime. Jennifer Goetz finished the game with 18 points and 16
rebounds. Cathy Mangan scored 14 for the Queen Bees, while adding five
rebounds and three assists. Jody Wulff added eleven points and six boards
for SAU. Culver-Stockton was led by Kristin Allen, who recorded 19 points
and eleven rebounds. Amber Dailing finished with 13 points, while Leslie
Peasel had 10. The Queen Bees scored the first nine points of the overtime
period to put the game away, as they moved to 7-6 on the season.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU used a 16-2 run in the first half to build
a 30-14 halftime lead against College of Saint Mary. That lead was almost
squandered however, as CSM rallied to cut the SAU lead to one point late
in the game. The Queen Bee defense held on the final possesion and CSM
couldn’t get a potential winning shot off, giving SAU a 49-47 victory.
That extends SAU’s win streak to seven games.
Looking Ahead: The Queen Bees will try to get revenge against
Augustana on Thursday night. Last season, Augie defeated St. Ambrose 86-82
in overtime in Rock Island. This year, the game will be played in
friendlier confines, as Augie will make the trip to Lee Lohman Arena.
Breitbach Serves Up The Trey: Freshman Casey Breitbach has
had a good start to her first season with the Queen Bees. The guard from
Dubuque, Iowa leads the team in 3-point shooting, making 41% of her shots
from beyond the arc. 14 of her 23 field goals so far this year have been
from 3-point range.
Stingy ‘D’: Culver-Stockton is only averaging 56.8 points per game
on offense, so it’s been their defense that has kept them in games this
year. The Wildcat ‘D’ has held opponents to 36% shooting this season,
which ranks second in the Hear of America Athletic Conference.
Unselfish Play: Both teams come into this game with one player in
the top five in assists of their respective conferences. Culver-Stockton’s
Ashley Nagel ranks second in the HAAC with 4.1 assists per game. Jill
Sweeney leads the Queen Bees in the category with 3.4 per game, which is
good enough for fifth in the Midwest Classic Conference.
Working With the Lead: So far this year, it’s been important for
the Queen Bees to establish the lead by halftime. SAU is 6-0 this season
when leading at the half. They are 1-1 when trailing at the break. SAU has
outscored their opponents in the first half by an average of 9.1 points
this year.
