1/7/06 - Viterbo (6-11, 0-1) at SAU (11-5, 1-0)
Series History: St. Ambrose leads
the all-time series 24-7. Viterbo has won the last two meetings between
the teams, winning both contests last season.
Last meeting: Viterbo won the last meeting 76-58 behind Shelly
Brueggen’s 20 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Anne Wilson added
19 points and five rebounds, while Cassi Bauch and Kari Thiel added 12 and
11 points, respectively. Jennifer Goetz led SAU with 17 points and four
blocks. Jody Wulff added 13, while Cathy Mangan had eight points and nine
rebounds.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU used a 16-2 run to end the first half and
take a 42-15 halftime lead against Ashford in Clinton, Iowa. SAU shot 53%
in the first half, but just 29% in the second as Ashford rallied, but came
up short, as SAU came away victorious, 72-58. Goetz scored a career-high
31 points. Mangan scored seven points, while also collecting five
rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.
Looking Ahead: SAU’s next game is Wednesday against William Penn at
Lee Lohman Arena. The two teams split a pair of games last season with the
road team winning each contest.
California Dreamin’: One highlight of SAU’s winter break was their
trip to California, December 16-21. The Queen Bees lost to The Master’s
College and Azusa Pacific, who are both ranked in the Top 25 in NAIA
Division I play. SAU was also able to visit Disneyland and attend a UCLA
women’s basketball game.
Board It: The Queen Bees and Lady
V-Hawks are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to rebounding.
SAU leads the conference in rebounding margin at +5.3 per game, while
Viterbo ranks last at -5.8 per game.
Whatever Jennifer Wants, Jennifer Goetz: SAU junior forward
Jennifer Goetz is coming off a game where she scored a career high 31
points. That surpasses her previous high of 30, set last year against
Viterbo. Goetz is now second in the conference in scoring with 18 ppg,
third in rebounding with 8.8 rpg, and seventh in assists with 2.4 apg.
The ‘Anne’swer: Viterbo has their own version of Goetz on their
team, in the form of Anne Wilson. The senior center leads the MCC in
scoring and rebounding with 19.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg. The Richland Center,
Wisconsin native also leads the conference in blocked shots with 2.6 per
game.
Magic Number=60: SAU should know if a game is in hand or not at the
60 point mark. The Queen Bees are 9-1 when they score over 60 points. SAU
is also a perfect 8-0 when they allow less than 60 points on the board.
Block Party: Wilson isn’t the only player on Viterbo that has been
swatting the ball into the stands this year. The Lady V-Hawks lead the
league in blocked shots with 3.7 per game.
