1/11/06 - William Penn (7-10, 1-1) at SAU (12-5, 2-0)
Series History: William Penn leads the all-time series, 12-10.
The two teams split a pair of games last season with the road team winning
each contest. SAU has won six of the last eight games in the series.
Last meeting: William Penn won the last meeting between these two
teams 71-60 in Davenport. Penn’s St. Ambrose led by five at halftime, but
WPU’s Trista Kolder scored 26 of her 27 points in the second half to give
Penn the victory. Kari Boscaljon added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the
Lady Statesmen. Cathy Mangan and Jennifer Goetz led the way for St.
Ambrose, each scoring 13 points.
SAU’s Last Time Out: SAU used their stifling defense to defeat
Viterbo 52-39. The V-Hawks shot just 30% in the game and MCC leading
scorer Anne Wilson was held to 14 points on 5 of 20 shooting. Cathy Mangan
finished with eight points, five rebounds, and six steals for the Queen
Bees. Jennifer Goetz scored a team-high 14 points. Jena Zientek added ten
points and five rebounds.
Looking Ahead: SAU’s next game is Saturday at Waldorf. The Warriors
are 1-1 in the MCC this season. The two teams split a pair of games last
year.
No Change: The Queen Bees have had the same look at the start of
every game this year, as they’ve started the same five players in all 17
games this season. Jill Sweeney, Cathy Mangan, Jody Wulff, Jennifer Goetz,
and Jena Zientek have all been on the floor for the every tip-off.
Stifling ‘D’: St. Ambrose has stepped things up defensively as
of late. The Queen Bees are allowing just 50 points per game in their last
six victories. They are second in the MCC, allowing 59.2 points per game.
That is also good enough for 18th in NAIA Division II.
Goetz Moves Up Career Ranks: SAU junior Jennifer Goetz continues to
move up several SAU career rankings. After Goetz’s 14 point, seven rebound
effort Saturday against Viterbo, she moves into 10th place on the school’s
scoring list with 1,291 points for her career. She needs just one point
tonight to pass Melissa Scherbring (1995-00) for ninth all-time. Goetz
also moved into sixth place on the school’s rebounding list. She now has
756 boards for her career, putting her 162 rebounds behind fifth place.
Mangan Swarms the Ball: Junior guard Cathy Mangan has been a ball
hawk this season, pressuring the opposing team into turnovers. Mangan is
averaging five steals per game in SAU’s last three contests.
Sometimes You Score, Sometimes You Don’t: William Penn ranks first
in the conference in scoring, averaging 67.6 points per game. However, the
Lady Statesmen have also given up a lot of points, allowing a league worst
73.6 points per game.
