CLINTON, Iowa -- SAU jumped all over Ashford, early and often, Wednesday
night in the Midwest Classic Conference opener. The game went much
as every game has gone for the Queen Bees this season, with a huge first
half, and having to hold on to the lead in the second half, winning 72-58.
SAU (11-5, 1-0) was flawless in the first
period, only trailing once, and leading by as many as 27 points. The Queen
Bees hit on 53% of their shots from the field, including five of nine from
behind the three-point line, getting two from Jennifer Goetz, and three
from Ashlie Maher. St. Ambrose finished the half on a 16-2 run, as they
took a 42-15 advantage into the locker room.
The second half was not as smooth for SAU.
After extending their lead to 29 points early, Ashford tried their best to
mount a comeback. The Saints (4-11, 0-1) cut the lead down to twelve with
eight minutes remaining, but could not get any closer, as the Queen Bees
held on for the victory, winning their conference opener for the fifth
consecutive year. Ashford shot 53% in the second half, while SAU shot just
29%. SAU was able to hang on for the victory, thanks to their 16 of 19
shooting at the foul line.
Jennifer Goetz led all scorers with a
career-high 31 points, breaking her previous high of 30, which was set
against Viterbo last season. Goetz also added eight rebounds for the Queen
Bees. Cathy Mangan continued her strong play of late, chipping in with
seven points, five rebounds, seven assists, and five steals. Maher
finished with nine points and three rebounds, while Jena Zientek scored
six, while grabbing seven boards.
Ashford was led by Jakki Alexander, who had
15 points and eight rebounds. Megan Van Hyfte contributed with 13 points
and five rebounds. Lindsey Miller had nine points for the Saints, while
pulling down five rebounds.
St. Ambrose will be back in action
Saturday, as they'll try to remain unbeaten at home when they'll face
Viterbo in their conference home opener. Game time is set for 1:00 and
will be followed by the men's contest versus the V-Hawks.
