Queen Bees Lose Opener to McKendree

Box Score

11/2/05

LEBANON, Ill. -- SAU's opening game of the 2005-06 season started out as a perfect start to a new year, but in the end, the Queen Bees tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing at McKendree 69-64.

SAU started the game looking like a well oiled machine, scoring the first eleven points of the contest, while jumping out to a 12 point lead just seven minutes into the game, which was the largest lead by either team all night. Junior Jennifer Goetz scored seven of their first 17 points to lead SAU to a great start. Goetz finished with 19 points for the game, which gives her over 1,000 for her career. She also added ten rebounds. The Queen Bees' offense died down a little late in the half, but they still managed to hold their own, falling behind by as much as five, but they headed to the locker room trailing by just two points.

In the second half, St. Ambrose began to outscore the Bearcats once again, getting out to a six point lead halfway through the second period, but McKendree took the lead for good with just under seven minutes remaining on a jumper by Emily Hart. SAU tried to battle back, cutting the lead to three on several occasions, but they couldn't get over the hump, dropping their season opener in head coach Amy Eagan's head coaching debut.

One bright spot for the Queen Bees was the play of freshman Casey Breitbach, who led all scorers with 20 points in her 27 minutes. Breitbach made seven of her eleven shots, including five of seven from beyond the arc. Cathy Mangan added 14 for SAU, while also recording three assists. Jena Zientek finished with six points and ten rebounds.

McKendree was led by Hart, who finished with team highs of 18 points and eight rebounds. Emily Best and Katie Hasheider finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Queen Bees will be in action again Friday, in day one of the Jim Fox Invitational. SAU will face Robert Morris at 7:30 in their home opener.
