Box Score
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- St. Ambrose never had a doubt they would win
Saturday's game against Mount Mercy. The Queen Bees led by as many as many
as 22 points, trailing just once, en route to a 72-53 victory over the
Mustangs (10-12, 2-4).
The Queen Bees only deficit came just one
minute into the game after a Katie Smith three-pointer put the Mustangs up
3-2. SAU (15-6, 5-1) then went on a 27-10 run over the next 10 minutes,
giving them plenty of breathing room for the rest of the game. The basket
seemed as big as an ocean at times to the Queen Bees, as they shot 61% in
the first half to take a commanding 15 point halftime lead. SAU also
connected on four-of-nine three-pointers.
The second half was a little more even, but
SAU's lead was too much to overcome for the Mustangs. The Queen Bees
continued their hot shooting, as they finished the game shooting 57% from
the field. SAU dominated Mt. Mercy on the boards all night, out rebounding
the Mustangs 37-17.
The Queen Bees were led by Jennifer Goetz,
who was 8-for-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the
three-point line. Goetz finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Jena
Zientek scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while also pulling down six
rebounds. Jody Wulff had another strong all-around performance, putting up
nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Mount Mercy had just one player in double
figures, as Katie Smith finished with 12 points, to go along with her
seven rebounds. Dani Anderson had a rare off night for Mount Mercy, thanks
to SAU's stifling defense. Anderson was 3-of-17 from the field for seven
points.
SAU will now return home after going 2-1 on
their recent road trip. The Queen Bees will play in a critical matchup on
Wednesday when Iowa Wesleyan visits Lee Lohman Arena. The Tigers are tied
with SAU atop the Midwest Classic Conference with identical 5-1 records.
Game time is set for 5:30 and will be followed by the men's game against
IWC.
