SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Saturday night, the St. Ambrose women's
basketball team got their toughest test of the season thus far, in the
form of The Master's College, who's ranked seventh in the NAIA Division I.
For the first half of the game though, it looked like it were St. Ambrose
who were ranked. But The Master's showed why they are, wearing the Queen
Bees down, en route to a 62-50 victory, snapping SAU's nine game winning
streak.
St. Ambrose (9-2) started the game a little sluggish, falling behind
early, 10-2. The Master's (6-2) looked as if they would run away with an
easy victory, as they got out to a 24-10 lead. The Queen Bees then showed
what they were made of, going on an 18-2 run to end the half and take a
two-point halftime lead. Jenn Dvorak came off the bench to score six
crucial points in that span. Dvorak and Jennifer Goetz combined for 13 of
SAU's 18 points in that stretch. SAU held the Master's to just 30%
shooting in the first half.
The Master's came out in the second half, showing why they're a top ten
team. They scored the first basket of the half, and never looked back,
leading the rest of the game. SAU continued their second half woes,
shooting just 31% from the floor. The Queen Bees couldn't handle The
Master's pressure at times, as SAU turned the ball over 25 times. Those
turnovers led to 24 points for The Master's.
The Queen Bees were once again led by the play of Jennifer Goetz, who
finished with 14 points and eleven rebounds. Jody Wulff scored 12 for SAU,
while Ashlie Maher had ten points, including making two of her five
three-pointers. Ali Rorah was aggressive on the glass, collecting a
game-high twelve rebounds.
Courtney Jackson helped the Master's to the win by scoring 22 points on 10
of 15 shooting. Grace Tappe chipped in with 12 points, while also grabbing
five rebounds and collecting three assists and six steals. The Master's
shot 45% in the second half to secure the win.
SAU will remain in California for a couple more days. After a day off, the
Queen Bees will travel to nearby Azusa, California to play Azusa Pacific.
That marks the first ever meeting between the two teams. Tip-off is set
for 6:00 CST.
