Defense Does It Again

FOREST CITY, Iowa -- There's been one common element in every one of SAU's
games this season. Defense. That element took effect again Saturday, as
the Queen Bees won at Waldorf, 55-40, to stay atop of the MCC race with a
4-0 record.
SAU has now allowed an average of 44.6 points in their last five games,
which helped them Saturday because they struggled to put the ball in the
basket in the first half. St. Ambrose shot 21% (6-29) in the first period,
but Waldorf didn't fare much better, shooting 33% (9-27). Despite their
poor shooting, SAU was able to take a four point lead into halftime,
thanks to their free throw shooting, in which they made 9 of their ten
foul shots. The game went back and forth for most of the half, with three
ties and eleven lead changes. SAU scored six of the final eight
points in the half to take the lead.
The second half provided a little more offense than the first. SAU shot
42% and made nine of twelve free throws. The Queen Bees never relinquished
the lead. Waldorf pulled to within one point after a three-pointer by
Katie Meyer to open the half, but things would not get any closer than
that. St. Ambrose scored ten consecutive points midway through the half to
put the game away.
SAU's Cathy Mangan led all scorers with 15 points on five of nine
shooting. Mangan also had six rebounds and three steals. Jennifer Goetz
added 14 points for the Queen Bees. Goetz also pulled down 11 rebounds to
complete yet another double-double for the junior. Ashlie Maher had five
points and five rebounds off the bench.
Waldorf was led by Maria Stoner, who was
the only Lady Warrior in double figures, with 11 points. Stoner was also
dominant on the boards, collecting 16 rebounds. Stoner also had four
assists. Meyer contributed eight points and five rebounds for Waldorf.
SAU's remains on the road for their next
two games, starting with Grand View on Wednesday. The Queen Bees and Lady
Vikings will tip-off at 5:30 in Des Moines.
