Box Score
OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The last time
St. Ambrose squared off against William Penn, it was the Queen Bees who
coasted to a 30-point victory. Wednesday, SAU was on the Lady Statesmen’s
home turf, which made the game a whole different story, with William Penn
squeezing out a 56-50 victory.
The first half was evenly matched, with five
ties and neither team getting out to more than a four point lead. The
Fighting Bees took a two point lead going into the locker room on a Jena
Zientek jump shot. Each team struggled to put the ball in the basket in
the first half. William Penn shot 33 percent from the floor, while SAU
didn’t fare much better, shooting 39 percent. The Queen Bees were able to
knock down two of their four three-point attempts.
The first couple minutes
of the second half went back and forth, but William Penn began to pull
away three minutes into the half. After a Jennifer Goetz lay-up put SAU up
by two, William Penn scored 15 unanswered points to take command of the
game. SAU would battle back however, cutting the lead to two points with
4:27 remaining after a 13-2 run, which was capped by an Ashlie Maher
three-pointer. That’s as close as the Queen Bees would get the rest of the
way, as William Penn was able to make a couple free throws down the
stretch and put the game out of reach.
Goetz led SAU with a
team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Zientek also had a strong game,
scoring 11 points and pulling down seven rebounds, while shooting five of
seven from the field. SAU shot just 32 percent in the game, including 27
percent (8-30) in the second half.
William Penn was led by
Latasha Pendleton, who had a monster game, scoring 17 points and ripping
down 17 rebounds, including 13 on the defensive end. Angela Bourrage
chipped in with seven points.
SAU will now return to
the friendly confines of Lee Lohman Arena for a three game stretch,
beginning Saturday against Ashford. Game time is set for 1:00 and will be
followed by the men’s contest against the Saints.
