Box Score
DAVENPORT, Iowa -- St. Ambrose came out of the gates Thursday looking like
a well oiled machine. The Queen Bees scored 25 of the first 30 points in
the game, putting the Lady Saints away early, en route to an 85-56
victory.
After falling behind by two in the initial
stages, SAU used a 23-1 run in a nine minute span to take the lead for
good, fueled by poor judgment on the part of the Lady Saints. Ashford
turned the ball over 14 times in the first half, including nine times in
the first 10 minutes. The Queen Bees shot 47% from the floor in the first
half, as they went to the locker rooms leading, 42-19. Ashford on the
other hand, struggled at times, shooting only 36% in the half.
The second half brought more of the same, as everyone got into the action.
14 of SAU's 15 players broke into the scoring column, as they continued
their hot shooting in the second half, connecting on 49% of their shots.
The Queen Bees also protected the ball well, only turning it over 14 times
in the game. SAU's largest lead came with a minute and a half, as Becky
Spears put them up by 29 on the final basket of the game. Ashford was just
1-of-10 from behind the 3-point line.
Jennifer Goetz led the Queen Bees with 11
points and five rebounds, while Jill Sweeney was the only other SAU player
in double digits, with 10. Cathy Mangan had nine points, while Ashlie
Maher and Sarah Dentlinger each had eight points off the bench. Ali Rorah
also scored eight off the bench, on 3-of-3 shooting, to go along with
eight rebounds. The points were distributed evenly, thanks to no one
playing more than 20 minutes in the game.
Ashford was led by Jakki Alexander's 16
point, 12 rebound effort off the bench. Megan Van Hyfte was the only other
Lady Saint in double figures, scoring 15, along with five rebounds.
Ashford's bench was outscored 49-21 in the contest.
SAU still has at least one home game remaining. They will be at Lee Lohman
Arena on Saturday, hosting Waldorf, who upset Grand View in Des Moines on
Thursday night. SAU defeated Waldorf both times they faced them this
season. Game time is set for 2:00.
