SAU Defeats Ashford, Keeps
Pace In MCC Race

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Queen Bees entered Saturday's game against Ashford,
trying to rebound from Wednesday's upset loss at William Penn. They were
able to do so in a big way, defeating the Saints 71-45, while keeping pace
with Iowa Wesleyan, who remains two games ahead of SAU after their win on
Saturday.
The Queen Bees (17-8, 7-3) scored the first eight points to set the tone
for the rest of the afternoon. SAU never trailed in the game, while
leading by as many as 13 in the first period. The Queen Bees shot 60% from
the field in the first half, while Ashford (5-19, 1-9) shot just 39%. The
Queen Bees took a 38-27 lead into halftime, which was as close as the
Saints would get the rest of the way.
SAU opened up their lead even more in the beginning of the second half,
scoring the first nine points of the half. SAU's largest lead came with
just under nine minutes remaining, as they went up by 31 points after a
Casey Breitbach three-pointer, which was one of two 3's Breitbach had in
the game. Ashford didn't help their cause any, as they shot just 24 % from
the field in the second half. They were also dominated on the boards. SAU
out rebounded the Saints 46-34.
Jennifer Goetz was once again the leading scorer for the Queen Bees with
17 points on six of eight shooting, to go along with six rebounds and four
assists. Cathy Mangan added 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
Jena Zientek finished with 10 points on five of nine shooting. Zientek
also added six rebounds and two blocks.
Ashford was led by Jakki Alexander's 13 points and six rebounds off the
bench. Charity Turnbull scored 11 for the Saints, to go along with her six
assists. Ashford shot just 46% (5-11) from the free throw line for the
game.
SAU's next game will be against Grand View at home. The Queen Bees are
currently in second place in the MCC, one game ahead of the Lady Vikings.
Game time is set for 5:30 and will be followed by the men's game against
the Vikings.
