SAU Holds On To Win

12/3/05
Box Score
DAVENPORT, Iowa -- SAU and the College of Saint Mary came into Saturday's game in very similar situations, with each team having won six consecutive games after dropping their season opener. Saturday, the Queen Bees ended CSM's streak, while building on theirs, defeating the Flames 49-47.

In the first few minutes, the game looked like it would be evenly matched the whole night, but SAU quickly ended that thought by going on a 16-2 run to open up a 20-8 lead. SAU didn't stop their first-half pressure, getting out to a 16-point lead. The Queen Bees took a 30-14 lead into halftime.

The second half, much like every other game this season, looked like a different team was on the court. The Flames outscored SAU 16-8 in the first ten minutes of the half to cut the Queen Bee lead in half. SAU was able to stretch it back to a nine point lead, but that's the biggest it would get for the rest of the night. Slowly, but surely, the Flames crept back into the game, thanks to a combined 22 second-half points by Chelsea Malone and Sarah Shafer.

After a Jennifer Goetz free throw with one minute remaining, the Queen Bees held a semi-comfortable seven-point lead, but SAU would miss their next three free throws, letting the Flames back into the game. After a Cathy Mangan turnover, CSM's Katie Homan converted on a lay-up with six seconds remaining. Casey Breitbach then made one of two free throws for SAU, giving CSM one last chance to win, but they could not get a shot off, giving SAU the two-point victory.

Goetz recorded her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 17, while grabbing 14 rebounds. Jill Sweeney finished with eight points, including two three-pointers in the first half. Ali Rorah scored a couple of key points down the stretch, giving her six points for the game.

College of Saint Mary was led by Shafer with 16 points, and Malone, who finished with 14, to go along with nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Homan scored six points off the bench for the Flames.

SAU will try to continue their winning ways Tuesday against Culver-Stockton. Tip-off is set for 7:00 at Lee Lohman Arena.
