DAVENPORT, Iowa -- What a different a day makes. After playing a slow-down
half court game in Friday night's win, the Queen Bees turned it up a notch
Saturday, defeating Olivet Nazarene in an offensive showcase, 98-85 in Day
two of the Jim Fox Invitational. The win moves SAU above .500 for the
first time this season, with a 2-1 record.
Each team played evenly in the first half,
with six ties in the period. SAU got out to their biggest lead in the half
with four minutes remaining on a jumper by Jennifer Goetz that put the
Queen Bees up by ten. Freshman Casey Breitbach kept SAU in the game,
hitting four of her five shots in the half, including three of four from
behind the arc. Breitbach finished the game with a game high 19 points,
but SAU's first half lead didn't last long, as Olivet went on a 17-6 run
to end the half and take a 51-50 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Olivet was able to hang
with SAU for the first ten minutes, but then SAU turned up the intensity
by scoring twelve unanswered points to break the game wide open with a
fifteen point lead. The Queen Bees shot a scorching 51% from the field in
the second half to put the game away.
The big difference in the game was
something St. Ambrose hasn't been able to do until this point in the
season, which is dominate the boards. The Queen Bees out rebounded the
Tigers 59-33, including 26-12 on the offensive boards. That's the most
rebounds SAU has recorded this year.
Goetz finished with 17 points and 12
rebounds for the Queen Bees, while also being named to the All-Tournament
Team. Jill Sweeney had her best game of the season, scoring a season high
17 points, while also recording seven assists and three rebounds. Cathy
Mangan finished with eight points, six assists and five rebounds.
Olivet was led by forward Kellie Mullin,
who scored a team high 14 points. Hilary Disch and Erin Griffin also
scored in double figures for the Tigers with 12 and 10 points,
respectively. Disch also added six rebounds and four assists in the losing
effort.
The Queen Bees will be back in action next
Saturday, as they'll go on the road to face Trinity International. Tip off is
set for 6:00 in Deerfield, Illinois.
