DAVENPORT, Iowa -- St. Ambrose head basketball coach Amy Eagan has waited
a lifetime for for this moment. Friday night, it finally happened. In her
home coaching debut, Eagan recorded her first career coaching victory,
defeating Robert Morris, 63-47 in game two of the Jim Fox Invitational.
The Queen Bees got out to another quick
start, thanks to their hustle and defense, getting out to an 8-2 lead. SAU
led by double digits for most of the half, and went into halftime with a
16 point lead, 32-16. Jennifer Goetz scored 13 points in the half to help
St. Ambrose pull away. The Queen Bees were helped in the first half by
Robert Morris' 25% shooting, compared to 32% for SAU, while St. Ambrose
also held a ten to five advantage on the charity stripe.
In the second half, SAU came out cold,
going the first four minutes without a field goal, until junior Ashlie
Maher came off the bench and gave the Queen Bees the lift they were
looking for. Maher scored eight points within a three minute span
to extend SAU's lead to 20. Maher finished the game a perfect 3-3
shooting, including 2-2 from beyond the arc. From there, St. Ambrose
coasted to an easy victory, not allowing Robert Morris to come within 15
points the rest of the way.
The Queen Bees were led by Goetz, who finished the game with 17 points and
six rebounds. Junior Cathy Mangan also had a solid outing, scoring nine,
while pulling down eight rebounds. Jody Wulff also helped to earn SAU's
first win of the year by chipping in with six points, five rebounds and
three assists.
Robert Morris was led by Cordney Jones and
Latoya Jackson, who each had twelve points in the contest. Jackson also
added four rebounds and four assists, before fouling out late in the game.
Robert Morris only got to the free throw line 20 times, making 10, while
SAU shot 21-36 from the line.
SAU's next game is Saturday at 3:00 in day
two of the Jim Fox Invitational, where they'll play Olivet Nazarene, who
lost to #1 ranked Morningside 112-81 in game one Friday. That game will be
preceded by the Morningside/Robert Morris contest, which begins at 1:00.
