Queen Bees Upend Platteville
11/22/05
Box Score
DAVENPORT, Iowa -- When St. Ambrose and UW-Platteville get together,
things tend to get interesting. Five of the last six meetings have been
decided by three points or less. Tuesday night was no different, as the
Queen Bees came away victorious, 55-54, for their fifth consecutive win.
At first, it looked as if SAU (5-1) would
run away with the game, scoring the first seven points of the contest.
That quickly changed, after a 13-1 run by Platteville (1-2). Ashlie Maher
then came off the bench to give SAU a much needed boost. Maher hit
consecutive three-pointers to help the Queen Bees regain the lead. The
lead see-sawed the rest of the half and SAU took a one point lead into the
locker room.
Platteville came out in the second half
much like the Queen Bees did in the first, scoring ten of the first twelve
points. St. Ambrose battled back though, going on a 15-0 run over the next
seven minutes. In this game however, no lead was safe at any time.
Platteville had one final surge left in them, scoring seven straight
points to cut SAU's lead to one. From there on, neither team led by more
than five.
SAU held a three point lead with one minute
remaining, before things got even more interesting. Platteville's Liz
Tesch two lay-ups on consecutive trips down the floor, the last one coming
with six seconds remaining to cut the lead to one. After a missed free
throw by Jill Sweeney on the other end, Platteville had one final chance
to win, but Stacia Nemitz's half-court shot was off the backboard and the
Queen Bee's escaped with the victory.
Jennifer Goetz led all scorers with 25
points for the Queen Bees, while adding seven rebounds. Sweeney finished
with eight points and three assists, while Jody Wulff had four points, six
boards, and four assists.
Platteville was led by Tesch, who made five
of her six shots, for twelve points. Holly Kaiser finished with eleven and
six rebounds, while Michelle Hardyman also scored in double figures, with
eleven.
SAU will try for a sixth straight win this
weekend, as they'll travel to Clinton, Iowa to take part in the River
Cities Classic. They'll play a tough Cardinal Stritch team Saturday at
1:00, before taking on Grinnell the following day, also at 1:00.
