2006 Season Preview

After wining conference last year and finishing 20th at nationals, the Saint Ambrose University women's golf team has a strong reputation to uphold this coming fall season, but after a great first week of play, the season looks promising.

As for recruiting, this year there are five new freshmen and two, possibly three, will be on the starting six.

“They are very competitive which helps all the players work harder” says second year head coach Mike Orfitelli about the new freshmen players. “Right now, all the players are working hard to establish themselves.”

The players are off to a good start though in their first week with Nicole Keeney averaging 78, followed by freshman McKenzie Hein at 83, and Emily Dean at 84.

In their first tournament of the season, the Queen Bees finished in second place, while Keeney and lone senior Emily Petruccelli finished tied for third place after firing 77’s. The team was five strokes off the pace.

Tori Bown led the freshmen with an 83 and Kenzie Hein was right behind with an 85.

“Overall, in practice I've been playing pretty well, but there are still some things I need to improve on” said freshman McKenzie when asked about her playing.

Emily Dean (Jr.) is confident about the team’s ability and progress since last season.

“I think I have a lot of potential," Dean said. "I've been working really hard this summer, and I plan to continue to work hard throughout the season.”

Winning the Midwest Classic Conference and NAIA Region VII titles and receiving another bid to the national tournament are three goals Ofitelli has set for his team this year. As for right now, he feels they are right where they should be.
