Queen Bees receive academic awardBy Maria Naert |

For the seventh time in his nine years at St. Ambrose, head
coach Bruce Billingsley has one of the smartest volleyball teams in the country.
The 2005 Queen Bee team was selected today as one of just 21 NAIA schools to be
honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association to receive a team
academic award. To be nominated, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or
higher. Included on the team were Academic All-American's Kelly Grimes and
Andrea Brooks. As a team, the Bees held a 3.46 GPA during the 2005-06 academic
year. "Fortunately I've been blessed to be around girls that are so well rounded," Billingsley said. "They're strong athletically, academically, and have an active community-service presence. It's one thing to acheive athletic success, but it's another thing to be recognized for what they're really here for, and that's an education." The Queen Bees were 17-15 in 2005, and return all but one from a team that finished fourth in the Midwest Classic Conference, and made it to the MCC semi-final. Outside of the court and classroom, the women also participated in an average of one community service project a month, doing everything from serving lunch at John Lewis Cafe to hosting youth sports clinics at Madison Elementary School. |
