John McGivern - Football

Inducted into Hall of Fame in 2001

John McGivern, a 1998 St. Ambrose graduate, played football from 1987-1988. McGivern was the the first-round defensive player of the game against St. Francis in the 1987 playoff game against St. Francis and was an Honorable Mention All-Conference Defensive Back selection. That same year, John was awarded the L.G. Friedrichs Newcomer of the Year Coach's Award. In his senior season, McGivern was recognized as a 1st team All-Conference punter.

Before coming to St. Ambrose, McGivern was an All-Conference Defensive Back twice at Benton Community High School in 1984 and 1985. He also set the school record for interceptions and was selected to play in the 1985 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game.

After graduating, John returned to help coach the St. Ambrose football team from 1989-1990. He went on to coach varsity football at Marian Catholic High School and taught at Alleman High School in Rock Island from 1990-1992.

John now lives in Crete, IL with his wife Stacy and son Shea. He works at Johnson and Johnson Orthopedics.
