Edward Wollenberg - Football
Inducted into Hall of Fame in 2001
Edward Wollenberg, a class of 1953 graduate, played football for four years
after being recruited by coach Larry "Moon" Mullins. During Edward's sophomore
year, the Saint Ambrose team had earned the title as the "winningest team in
collegiate football". That same season, St. Ambrose garnered conference
championships in both the Iowa Conference and the Midlands Conference.
Wollenberg added to the team's winning tradition and gained most of his
recognition as an offensive guard He was a three year varsity letter
winner and a varsity starter in his junior and senior seasons.
As a player for Leo High School, Wollenberg played six times at Soldier Field.
He was a named to the All-Catholic League 2nd team by the Chicago Sun Times.
Outside of athletics, Wollenberg was also involved as the vice president of the
Monogram Club. After graduation, he coached grammar school football for 11
years. Edward summarized his most memorable Saint Ambrose football moments with
the "unforgettable impressions of Coach Moon Mullins."
After working 30 years with All-State Insurance, Wollenberg is now retired. He
lives in Oak Lawn, IL with his wife Donna and five children, Lisa, Peggy, Ed,
Dan and Tom.
