Work Study Job Descriptions

Choose at least 3 departments in which you would like to work.  Every effort will be made to place you in a job that fits your experience, qualifications and may be related to your major.

There are three departments that have their own applications: Campus Recreation, the Library and Security. After reading these job descriptions, if you find that you are interested in Campus Recreation, the Library, or Security, please call or email and ask for their applications and fill them out before coming to the Career Center.


ACCEL, Clerical Assistant, (Supervisor - Jerry Fowler)
Supervisor will interview students from within applicable majors. The primary function of the work study student would be to assist the ACCEL staff with marketing, correspondence, greeting guests, extra coverage at the front desk, taking registrations, preparing new student packets, informational packets and other varied tasks. This job requires transportation.

Advancement, Office Assistant, (Supervisor – Marianne Siess)
Students will be required to assist with data entry and major mailings. Clerical duties such as organizing the office file room which will include alphabetizing, cleaning and organizing existing files, identifying donors in need of a file, pulling files with a placeholder and putting them away and creating a master list of file room contents. Students will also provide assistance to the staff in copying, filing and running errands as well as contact with students, staff, faculty and alumni in person and by phone. The advancement office is located in the Professional Arts building on Brady and Locust Streets. The Professional Arts building is the same walking distance as Galvin Fine Arts Center is from the Library.

Alumni Office, Office Assistant, (Supervisor – Marianne Siess)
Students will be required to assist with data entry, major mailings and event planning and attendance. They will provide assistance with copying, filing, running errands, phone coverage and mail distribution. The Alumni Office is located in the Professional Arts building on Brady and Locust Streets. The Professional Arts building is the same walking distance as Galvin Fine Arts Center is from the Library.

America Reads, Program Assistant (group leader), or Tutor – (Supervisor – Mary Ohland)
Transportation required. Student will be placed at one of the Elementary Schools within the Davenport Community School District. This is an excellent opportunity for elementary education majors to obtain related work experience for their resumes. Students must be available to work from approximately 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Some schools might start at 3:00pm or at 3:20pm. Students will work 4 days per week for approximately 2 hours per day. Group leaders will stay with students, checking them in and checking them out. They will interact with them by helping them with homework. They might also help the teacher maintain discipline, pass out materials or assist with recreational activities. Tutors will help students one-on-one or in small groups. They will tutor reading, math and spelling or help with FROG kits. 

Art, (Supervisor – Les Bell)
Art Department Computer Monitor – Skilled in Word, Excel, Access, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark. Majors desired are: Graphic Design, Photography, and Art History. Hours: Mornings/Afternoons.
Slide Library – Skills desired: Scanning/Digital Photography. Art Majors. Hours: flexible.
Catich Gallery – Students will great other students, public, staff and faculty. Responsibilities include data entry, digital photography, guarding art shows and monitoring the Gallery. Hours: Weekends and afternoons.

Arts and Sciences, (Supervisor - Paul Koch)
Department Supervisor will place students from within applicable majors.

Athletics, Office Assistants, (Supervisor – Tony Huntley)
The student will answer phones, pick up mail, have computer skills in Word and Excel and make deliveries across campus as well as support the coaching staff.

Athletics, Individual Team Sports Workers – (Supervisor – Tony Huntley)
Student athletes will assist in their own departments. For example, football players will do laundry for the football team. Some athletes will work in the weight room or equipment room as assigned.

Bookstore, Clerk, (Supervisor - Kathy Cameron)
The student will be responsible for answering phones, assisting customers and students. The worker helps staff stock shelves, fold clothing, run cash register, and work on displays. The student must be able to lift 40 lbs. The bookstore hours are 8-6 weekdays, 8-4:30 Friday, and 9-2 Saturdays.

Campus Ministry, Assistant, (Supervisor – Sheila Deluhery)
The student will be responsible for copying, filing, answering phones, running errands and going to the Post Office. Any major can apply, preference given to those students interested in Campus Ministry or Theology. Hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm.

Campus Recreation, 11 different positions, (Supervisor – JT Timmons)
Aqua Fitness Instructor – Completion of FITC preferred.
Games Scorer/Time Keeper – Keep accurate records of all game related data.
Graphic Artist – Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher in order to create and produce promotional materials (posters, ads, flyers, etc.)
Group Fitness Instructor – Provide instruction for group fitness sessions – experience required.
Lead Student (Facility/Event Supervisor) – Assistant to GA, Intern and Director.
Office Assistant – Receptionist duties
Personal Trainer – Certifications through AFAA or ACSM preferred.
Sports Official – Training will be provided, but student must be able to call the games accurately without regard to criticism.
Student Fitness Director – Assistant to GA and Intern with management and planning of Fitness Program responsibilities.
Web Designer – Assist GA and Intern with maintenance of web site.
Writer – Work closely with Intern in communicating programs and services.


Communication, Office Assistant, (Supervisor - Ann Preston)                                                    Students will be conducting phone research. Computer skills needed are: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Quark Xpress, Adobe Photo Shop. Office duties include copying, campus errands, light research, filing and organizing. Prefer Communication majors: Radio/TV, Mass Communications, Public Relations/Marketing and Journalism

Communications and Marketing, Office Assistant, (Supervisor – Darcy Duncalf)
Students will answer phones, staff the front desk and may be asked to contact staff or faculty for information. Experience in customer service preferred. Additional duties are: copying, filing, typing, sending news releases and going to the Post Office. Computer skills required are Word, Excel, and Quark Xpress on Macintosh. 

Computer Lab, Lab Assistant, (Supervisor – Derek Koslowski)
The student is required to open and close labs – wiping down boards, picking up, will have to check paper and toner every time they are scheduled to work. The student is responsible for deleting any trash and turning on or off all the computers depending on the shift. The student is responsible for helping other students with basic problems, distributing signs around campus or moving computer equipment. Hours vary depending on the lab you are working in. Students are required to know all Microsoft applications. Students who know the MAC are asked to apply.

Computer Science, Lab Assistant, (Supervisor - Mark McGinn)
The student will be responsible for working on the computer. The student needs to have knowledge of installation and management experience with Linux or Windows 2000. The specific duty required is General Systems Management. The student should be a CS, CIS, or CNA major

Criminal Justice, Clerical Assistant, (Supervisor - Waylyn McCulloh)
Student must be Sociology, Criminal Justice, Political Science or Psychology major. Student will answer phones, greet and provide general information, copying, filing, running errands, put together information packets, and work on computer with Word and Excel. The worker needs to be a self-starter, motivated, cooperative, and have some research experience. The hours are 10-6 Monday -Thursday and 9-1 on Fridays.

Services for Students with Disabilities, Clerical Assistant/Reader, (Supervisor – Ryan Saddler)
The student will be responsible for meeting and greeting faculty and students who use the services, he/she will be picking up exams, dropping off exams, making appointments, reading books on tape, helping with accommodations such as note takers, recordings for the blind, alternate exams and proctor exams. Prefer OT/Education majors, but anyone can apply. They are more specifically looking for students who are able to read on tape and have a good reading voice. The hours are weekdays, 8:00a.m. -5:30p.m. 

Education, Clerical Assistant, (Supervisor - Barb Schroeder)
The student will be responsible for copying, running errands, and going to the post office. The student worker cannot be an education major or be in the same academic area, because job requires specific duties. The student needs to be punctual and reliable. The hours are flexible, no weekends, and they will consider early evening or late afternoon.

Education Technology, Technical Assistant, (Supervisor - Carol Lyon)
The primary functions of the student worker include using computer skills such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and FrontPage. The specific duties include making appointments with students, assisting students during class and assisting professors in the department. The hours are flexible. 

English, Department Assistants, (Supervisor - Owen Rogal)                                                      Clerical work - picking up and delivering books, videos, etc. from the library and elsewhere; Xeroxing for faculty courses and department programming, being available during set work hours for chores as they come up. Prefer English majors or students who have an interest in library or research.

English (Quercus), Production Assistant, (Supervisor - Carl Herzig) 
Supervisor will place students from within applicable majors.

Financial Aid, Clerk, (Supervisor - Julie Haack)                                                                  Phone coverage over lunch hour, meet and greet students, faculty, staff and parents. Office work includes: copying, filing, answering phones and transferring phone calls, making appointments, giving information, running errands and going to the Post Office. Students must sign a confidentiality agreement. Preferred majors are: Business, Accounting and Finance.

Galvin Box/Front Office, Customer Service Representative, (Supervisor – Barbara Orfitelli)
Sell tickets on the computerized ticket selling system. Respond to questions from the Galvin Fine Arts guests. Answer phone, sell event tickets, sell concessions at events, and assist with all front of house responsibilities. Nights and weekend work.

Galvin Technical, Fine Arts Technician, (Supervisor – Kris Eitrheim)
Theatre experience or construction skills helpful, but not necessary. Students must work with tools building sets. Lifting and carrying 50lbs are part of the job. Would really like theatre majors. Hrs: Mornings and afternoons, an occasional night or weekend.

Game Room, Monitor, (Supervisor – Jamie Wildhage)
Referrals from Admissions Advisors Only. The student will answer phones a little, greet students and public, check Ids, make popcorn and coffee, and clean up equipment after shift. The student needs to be reliable and dependable. The game room hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm, weekends vary. Campus ground’s hours are 5:00pm- 10:00pm Sunday – Thursday.

General Accounting Services, Assistant, (Supervisor - Carol Glines)                                         Students will be copying, filing, answering phones, running campus errands, data entry and alphabetizing. Students should be comfortable using a computer, as they will be trained to use the Datatel system. Prefer Accounting, Business or Finance majors. Hrs: Weekdays 8am - 5pm

Housekeeping, Clerical, (Supervisor – Rhonda Brockhouse)
Answering phones, taking messages, entering data on the computer through Filemaker Pro, copying, stocking shelves, running errands and keeping track of inventory

International Students, Assistant, (Supervisor - Sherri Spillman)
The student is responsible for answering phones, greeting people, working on the computer with Word, Excel and Datatel, responding to inquiries, inputting data, and becoming familiar with basic information for international students. Interest in international affairs is a plus. Hours are flexible within 8:30 and 4:30.

Informational Technology, CIDT, (Supervisor - Linda Skahill)
Supervisor will place from within applicable majors. The students will be responsible for working on the computer with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Video and sound editing. Other computer skills include learning and using Blackboard software. Specific skills include computer, Internet skills and the ability to quickly study and learn computer programs. The hours are flexible.

KALA-Radio, Production Assistant, (Supervisor – Dave Baker)
Students will be assisting with all clerical duties such as copying, filing, answering phones and transferring phone calls, greeting students, making appointments, running errands and talking to the public. Computer work required and is Mac based. Communication majors and Radio-TV people are preferred. Students enthusiastic about working with live radio broadcasting are encouraged to apply. All hours of the day, night or weekends are available. 

Library, Assistant, (Supervisor - Carol Anne Chouteau) 
Supervisor will place after review of Library Application. The student will be responsible for answering phones and greeting the public. The students need to be able to work with the computer navigating through their online system for checkout and check in of materials, some search by computer skills and shelving books. Lifting may be asked of the student when boxes of books come in and paper is needed. Library work is detail oriented, so it is very important to notice things and think on your feet. The hours are flexible; the library is open 100 hours a week. There are open nights until 12a.m.; Saturdays are rotated with student employees and Sunday’s noon-12a.m.

Minority Affairs, Student Activities Assistant, (Supervisor - Veronica Riepe)                               Supervisor will place from within applicable majors. The duties of the student will include answering phones, greeting people, working with the computer using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher, copying, filing, data entry, hanging posters, getting mail, and creating the activity calendar.

Modern Languages, Student Assistant, (Supervisor – Scot Heisdorffer)
Supervisor will place from within applicable majors.

MSW, Clerk, (Supervisor – Toni Wamsley)
The student is responsible for answering phones, copying, filing, compiling application packets, preparing mass mailing, data entry, run errands, get mail, and some library and internet searches. They are looking for someone with computer skills and the ability to use Word, Excel and WordPerfect. There is interaction with students, staff and faculty in the MSW program. The physical requirements consist of ability to pick up packages and copy paper. The hours are Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30 and Saturdays 8:30-12:30.

Music Department, General Assistant/Band Office Assistant, (Supervisor - Gene Bechen)
Equipment Assistant/Choral Office Assistant – Supervisor – Andy Mast
Supervisor will place from within the music department majors

Nursing, Clerical Assistant, (Supervisor – Carol Shoemaker)    The student will be responsible for copying, running errands, and going to the post office.  The student worker for the faculty cannot be a nursing major.  Lab assistants must be nursing majors approved by Sharon Marquard because this job requires specific duties.  The student needs to be punctual and reliable.  The hours are flexible for the faculty, no weekends, however the lab assistants have specific hours.

Occupational Therapy, Clerk, (Supervisor - Lori Parker)
The student would be expected to make copies, run errands, run to the post office, fax, assist faculty, pick up videos, journal articles and help with various other projects. MOT or pre-MOT students will not be applicable. The hours are 8-4:30 Monday-Friday.

Physics, Lab worker, (Supervisor – Tom Yang)
Student will be setting up labs. Must have completed at least one of the following courses: PHYS 251, PHYS 253, PHYS 203, PHYS 204, PHYS 201, OR 
PHYS 205.

Post Office, Clerk, (Supervisor - Laura Cornish)
The student is responsible for answering the phones and at the switchboard, sorting mail, running postal equipment, selling stamps, running errands; some heavy lifting is required, and cataloging packages. Knowledge of switchboard experience is helpful but not necessary. Filing skills are a must, and the ability to make change. They are looking for someone with honesty, reliability and discretion. The hours are 8-4:30 Monday- Friday and 8-11 Saturdays.

Professional Development, Assistant, (Supervisor – Kim Raap)
Students will be assisting with programs/rental preparation: set up and tear down, breaks and lunches, shopping, typing and binding handouts. They will also type evaluations and be responsible for copying, filing and data entry. The Professional Development Office is located at the St. Ambrose University Accel Center on 54th Street in Davenport. Transportation required. Office hours are: M-F 8:00am – 5:00pm.

Project Renewal, Assistant, (Supervisor - Mary Ohland)
Must have transportation – Office is located at 906 W. 5th St. in Davenport. The student’s duties include assisting in supervision of educational and recreational activities designed to teach inner city children grades K-8 need life skills such as self-esteem, time management, non-violent conflict resolution, interpersonal skills and appropriate social behavior. Other duties are assisting children with homework, developing a supportive mentoring relationship, serve as a positive role model, assist in preparing and supervising in house recreational/educational activities and assisting in clean up and organization of program supplies. Prefer Education and Psychology majors. The hours are Monday- Friday 3:00-5:30p.m.

Psychology, Department Office Assistant, (Supervisor – Carol DeVolder)
Students will be copying, filing, greeting and taking messages from students, running errands and going to the Post Office and Library. They will also grade exams and enter grades in grade books and proctor exams as needed. Students must be reliable and adhere to a specific work schedule including finals week. Computer skills required are: Word and PowerPoint. Prefer Psychology majors, but not mandatory.

Records and Registration, Assistant – (Supervisor - Maggie Avon)
The student is expected to answer phones, greet students, faculty and staff, register students, help with mass mailings, run errands, and go to the post office. The student will be making appointments, copying, filing and transferring calls. There is computer work required using Word and Excel. The hours are between 8:30-4:00.

Science Labs, Lab Prep Assistant, (Supervisor – Andy Axup)
Supervisor will place those students who have taken mandatory coursework.

Security, Student Guards, (Supervisor – Bob Christopher)
Students will secure academic buildings, conduct routine patrols of buildings and campus grounds and provide emergency intervention, policy enforcement and campus escort services.  Criminal Justice majors or those students with related security experience preferred.

SPED, Graduate Special Education Assistant, (Supervisor - Penny McCulloch)
The duties of the student include answering the phone, greeting students, assisting students with library checkout, using the computer using Word, copying, filing, picking up and dropping off mail, cataloging books, special projects assigned. Will not hire Education majors. The hours of the office are 8:00-6:30 Monday–Friday. 

Student Account Services, Assistant, (Supervisor - Ed Henkhaus)
The student’s responsibilities include answering the phone, assist customers, working with the computer, copying, filing, transferring calls, running errands, and going to the post office. The office is more specifically looking for Finance, Accounting, and Business majors. The hours are 8-4:30 Monday–Friday.

Student Services, Assistant, (Supervisor – Michelle Voelkers)
The student will answer phones, greet students and guests, work with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, copy, file, run errands, create Ids, and issue parking stickers. The person needs to have good interpersonal skills. The hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday. 

The Career Center, Assistant, (Supervisor – Mary Ohland)
Answer phones, schedule appointments on Microsoft Outlook, open and sort mail, greet students, list jobs on the internet, type labels for file folders, assist in preparation of work-study timecards, events and preparation of workshops. The hours are 8:00am – 4:30 M, T, R & F. 8:00am – 6:00 Wednesdays only.

Theater, Administrative Assistant, (Supervisor - Corinne Johnson)
Supervisor will place students from within applicable majors.

Theology, Assistant, (Supervisor - Corinne Winter)                                                            Supervisor will place students from within applicable majors. Students are asked to answer phones, work on the computer with Word and Excel, copying, filing, runnig errands and going to the post office. Some recording of grades is asked, so the student needs to have high degree of trust because of confidentiality. The hours are 8-11am and 1-3pm on M, T, and W 9-2pm and T and R 10-3pm.

TV-11, Assistant, (Supervisor – Duke Schneider)
Work-study Students will answer phones and give tours. They will edit TV systems, run master controls, tapes on air and work televised events. They will assist students and help at the front desk. Majors desired are Radio-TV and Communication. The TV studio is not handicap accessible. Students with knowledge or experience in TV production or in TV writing will be given preference. Evening and weekend hours will be expected.

Wilson Elementary School, Reading Tutor, (Supervisor – Mary Ohland)
Must have transportation. Wilson Elementary is approximately 1 mile from St. Ambrose University. This is a reading program. Facilitator will work around student’s schedule. There can be morning as well as after school work opportunities. The work-study student will assist the teachers with their reading programs and help groups as well as individual students. This is excellent experience for elementary education majors. 

Women's Studies, (Supervisor - Bea Jacobson)                                                                       Student will be supervising the Women's Resource Center. Duties consist of general clerical work: answering phones, assisting students in finding materials in the center, running errands, copying, filing, and bulletin board creation. Would like Women's studies minors and those students who have an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of Women's Studies, basic research skills, and the familiarity with a small library. Office hours are M-F 8-5.
