Are Online Courses for Me?

Jump to: Computer and Internet Skills

Online Learner Profile

Are you able to work comfortably independently and converse effectively through written communication?

Do you anticipate that an online course is going to be as or perhaps even more time-intensive than a typical classroom-delivered course given the writing time involved with web-based communication?

Are you able to set aside 15 or more hours each week and regularly adhere to a personal study schedule to meet course assignment deadlines?

Are you generally comfortable with using computers, able to follow written instructions, and patient when technological issues or problems arise?

Are you comfortable with asking for assistance or being assertive when situations warrant?

Do you enjoy reflecting on topics and organizing your thoughts in writing before sharing them publicly with others?

Do you enjoy reading and reacting to the work submitted by student peers with constructive criticism? In turn, do you appreciate the critical comments of others--and not inclined to get overly defensive--regarding the work you have submitted?

Computer & Internet Skills

Are you comfortable with using Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Internet Explorer, versions 4.01 or newer, to access URL sites on the World Wide Web?

Can you use e-mail to create or reply and send messages to select individuals?

Do you know how to have two or more software programs open at the same time and copy and paste text between applications, such as from a wordprocessed document into the body of an e-mail message?

Can you send a wordprocessed file as an attachment with e-mail, such as when sending a longer document of more than three pages?

Do you know how to download and save a file to a folder on your hard drive or floppy disk, then locate and open it to install desired programs or update existing programs on your computer?

Can you print out web pages, if desired, for off-line viewing (useful for reviewing assignment instructions and examples)?

Do you have reliable access to the Web and a suitable computer that meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for the course?
