Fair use has traditionally allowed for the limited display and performance of copyrighted works (including photocopying them for similarly limited use) provided they are used only for nonprofit scholarly and/or research applications, including teaching in the face-to-face classroom setting provided specific conditions are met. Now, by the TEACH act, fair use has been extended to include distance education classes under certain specific conditions.
