TV/Radio
Students in this major gain experience in all stages of
radio and television production. Their first year, students
are encouraged to take radio and television production
courses, which give them hands-on training operating audio
and video equipment and reporting broadcast news. Students
are encouraged to get involved with KALA radio and TV-11
studios. After graduation, they may choose to work at TV and
radio stations, corporate audio/visual production
departments, training centers or creative agencies.
Journalism
The focus of this major is writing and
editing for all areas of print and electronic media,
including in-depth features, news, sports and commercials.
The major also emphasizes research, interviewing and
reporting skills and trains students in the latest desktop
publishing techniques. Students are encouraged to get
involved with The Buzz campus newspaper. Graduates in this
major typically choose jobs as writers, reporters and
editors with newspapers, magazines, corporate communication
departments and creative agencies.
Public
Relations and Marketing Communication
Students in this major learn how to help
organizations manage their image through the media and in
the community. Courses develop skills in writing, speaking,
marketing management, desktop communication and research.
Students are also encouraged to work with the TV and radio
studios or the newspaper to understand how the news
gathering process works. These majors are prepared for jobs
in creative agencies and in the communication or marketing
department of corporations or non-profit organizations.
Media Studies
The Media Studies major gives students the opportunity to take a focused selection of courses in journalism, public relations, public speaking and media theory. In addition, Media Studies majors will have the opportunity to take courses in Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, English, Art and Theater.
While graduates are prepared to go on to graduate studies, Media Studies majors are also prepared for such positions as television producer or director, on-air or on-camera talent, press secretary, speechwriter, reporter or communication researcher. The major is excellent preparation for careers in advertising, public relations or publishing, as well. Internships are a popular feature of the Media Studies program: students spend a few hours per week or an entire term getting on-the-job training and learning from professionals in the field. Ambrose students have interned at virtually every television and radio station and newspaper in the area, including the NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX affiliates, The Quad City Times, Moline Dispatch and Rock Island Argus. These professional experiences have a direct influence on employment after graduation.
