Insurance Education - Instructors


LAURIE ADAMS, CLU, LUTCF, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ®
Ms. Adams is a Regent's Scholar of the University of Nebraska.   She is a 1984 LUTC graduate, obtained her CLU designation in 1988, and her LUTCF in 1993.  Laurie is a multi-line agent with over 25 years of experience, she also has 19 years experience in continuing education instruction.  Ms. Adams is listed in Who's Who in Finance & Industry, a past president of the Peoria Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, and a three-year host of the 'Let's Talk Insurance' weekly radio program.
 
JOHN BYRNE, PH.D.
Dr. Byrne is a full time faculty member in the College of Business at St. Ambrose University.  He has been teaching at the university level for 10 years in the areas of finance, management, and marketing.  Prior to teaching, John worked as a commercial banker for 6 years.  In addition to teaching at St. Ambrose, John has served as a consultant for a variety of organizations and provides education to business professionals through manuals and on-site instruction.
 
 

PATRICK HATTING, MBA, ChFC, CLU, LUTCF
Patrick is an alumnus of the University of Iowa.  He entered the financial services industry in 1987 after a six year active duty tour in the Air Force.  He has a Series 6, 7, 8 and 65 licenses with the NASD.  Patrick is a past president of the Lansing, Michigan Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.  He has previous college level teaching experience in Economics and Business Law.  Patrick has been an adjunct instructor for St. Ambrose since 2006 and maintains a full-time personal lines insurance practice in Grinnell, Iowa.

 

CAROL JENSEN
Ms. Jensen has worked in agricultural lending and in the banking industry since 1981, where she currently has management and training responsibilities.  She has taught graduate and undergraduate business courses for public and private universities and colleges since obtaining her M.B.A. degree in 1994.  She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  


Ms. Jensen has received numerous teaching awards.  Along with classroom teaching, she has been instrumental in developing and providing courses via non-traditional deliveries, such as online, independent study, and ICN.
 
 

DAVID KLINE
David Kline graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelors Degree in Marketing.  His entire career of over 35 years has been in the Group Insurance business.  During this time he has been associated with insurance companies, large national insurance brokerage firms and Third Party Administration firms with assignments in New Orleans, Louisville, San Francisco and St. Louis prior to returning to Iowa.  His experience has been in sales and management in all areas of Group Insurance including Group Life, Short and Long Term Disability, Group Health, Section 125 plans, Voluntary Coverages as well as the administration of Group Health Self Funded Plans.
 
 

JAY C. MATLOCK, CPCU, AMIM, ARM
Originally from Indiana, Jay graduated cum laude from Indiana State University in 1970.  He joined Ruhl & Ruhl in 1980 and became Vice President as well as a principal of the agency in 1989.

In 1973, Jay began his insurance career with Liberty Mutual.  He earned his "Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter" (CPCU) professional designation in 1984 and in 1994, also earned the professional designation "Associate in Marine Insurance Management" (AMIM). In June 2000, Jay earned the "Associate in Risk Management" designation, ARM.

Jay served as coordinator for the Quad Cities Insurance Education Council and as an instructor of various insurance courses for several years.  Jay has held all the executive positions of the Quad City Chapter, Society of CPCU as well as the Board of the Independent Agents of Scott County.  Jay also belongs to Greater Quad-Cities "Risk and Insurance Management Society" (RIMS) and has served on its membership.

 

J. WILSON McCALLISTER, J.D.
J. Wilson McCallister entered the private law practice in June 1969 and subsequently admitted to partnership in the firm of Cooney, McCallister & Zwack, Dubuque, Iowa.  From 1971 to 1978 Mr. McCallister was a part-time instructor of business law at Loras College, and in 1981 joined the Deere & Company Law Department, Moline, Illinois.  As Associate General Counsel he managed the Company's product litigation, early dispute resolution program, mergers and acquisition activities, and special litigation. His experience includes all phases of the practice, including the prosecution and defense of civil litigation at the trial and appellate court levels, alternate dispute resolution, and general corporate practice.  Mr. McCallister's publications include: An In-house Review of the Corporate Counsel's Guide to Litigation Management, The Journal of Corporation Law (Winter 1997); David H. Canter and J. Wlson McCallister, Managing Product Liability Risks: A Comprehensive Guide to Wining .Strategies for Managing Product Liability, Aspatore, Inc. (Boston, 2005).

Mr. McCallister received his B.A. in government and history from Florida State University and his J.D. from the University of Iowa.  He is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and Florida State Bar Association

 

RANDY RICHARDS, PH.D.
Dr. Richards is a Professor of Philosophy and Business at St. Ambrose University, where he became a full-time faculty member in 1993.  He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa in 1996 and holds an M.A. in Philosophy from Georgetown University, Washington D.C.  He received his B.A. in Philosophy at St. Ambrose in 1971.  Prior to 1993, Randy performed management, training, and consulting responsibilities with several local companies while serving as Adjunct Professor in Philosophy with St. Ambrose.  He is recognized for his expertise in the field of organizational behavior, process development, business ethics, and human resource management.
 
 

GARY SOLDAT
Mr. Soldat graduated from Western State College of Colorado.  He is an experienced underwriter and instructor.  He has taught all aspects of insurance including licensing, field underwriting, and sales.  In addition, he has taught various insurance programs for the Insurance Institute of America.  Gary has written and coauthored a number of study guides for both pre-license and continuing education programs.

 

JACKIE VAN METER, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL
PLANNER ®

Ms. Van Meter holds licenses for life, accident and health and variable contracts in Iowa. She is also NASD registered for investments (Series 7). Ms. Van Meter has a Bachelor of the Arts Degree from Loras College, where she graduated maxima cum laude with a degree in accounting. She has worked in group insurance for 17 years and in individual insurance for 14 years. She has spoken in front of professional planning groups, conducts seminars for organizations and maintains a full-time insurance practice with Steele Financial Services in Dubuque, Iowa. She attained her Certified Financial Planner Designee status in 2000.
