Instructional Strategies for students with Learning Disabilities

  • Teach study skills explicitly in the context of the content area.
  • Provide handouts to expand on topics and add to textbook material.
  • Use a multisensory approach.
  • Review material; provide repetition.
  • Gain the students’ attention with:
  • Use questions.
  • Provide opportunities for previewing.
  • Use concrete presentations.
  • Teach terms and definitions clearly and explicitly.
  • Make sure that directions for assignments are given clearly.
  • Consider the following when giving written assignments:
  • Allow students to tape class lectures if appropriate
  • Provide as much opportunity as possible for students to meet with you one-on-one.
  • Organize material presented in class in a meaningful way.
  • Be sensitive to students.
