Services Provided
Academic Advising: The learning
disability specialists can be the academic advisor for students with disabilities during
their first year on campus. Students are assisted in selecting courses while taking into
consideration their disabilities.
Advocacy:
When needed, assistance is provided in relating the nature of the student's disability to
faculty and others in promoting accommodations appropriate to the specific situation.

Alternate Exam
Arrangement: Exam modifications may include extended time, large print tests,
separate testing room, or use of a reader, scribe, or computer.

Assistive Technology:
An Arkenstone Reading Machine, Jaws for Windows, and Dragon Naturally Speaking are
available to students. Students also have access to having printed material scanned into a
computer and read back to them, or text on a computer disk can also be read out loud.

Books on Tape:
Staff members will assist students in obtaining textbooks or other class material from
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic or will record material for students.

Equipment Loan:
The office has four-track cassette players, cassette recorders and computer equipment
available.

FM Hearing Assistance
System: For persons who are hard of hearing, we have individual receivers and a
variety of headset adaptations.

Learning Disability
Specialist: One-to-one strategy instruction is available to assist students in
compensating for their learning disability.

Liaison with Outside
Agencies: The coordinator works with local and state agencies such as
the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the Department for the Blind.
Students can be referred to these agencies for help with funding or to receive services
that are not available on campus.

Note Takers:
Note takers are available to students who have a disability that interferes with taking

Readers: If
time does not permit recording classroom material or exams, or if a student prefers having
the material read, arrangements can be made to obtain a reader.

Screening and Referral:
The Coordinator works with an area psychologist and the Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation to provide diagnostic testing for students who are suspected to having a
learning disability.

Sign Language Interpreters: Interpreters are provided for classes and other campus
activities.

Summer Transition
Program: In this four-week college preparation program for students with
learning disabilities, emphasis is placed on development of learning strategies, as well
as study and self-advocacy skills.
