EDUC 205. Field Experience (First or Second Year) 2 credits

Students should reserve blocks of time to complete 70 hours of field work per semester. Prospective teachers serve as teacher aides in area schools or child care centers. Students attend a weekly seminar. Required of all education students. Regular grade option.

PURPOSE:

Field Experience serves two purposes. First, it is designed to give the student who is thinking of entering the educational profession a practical experience with education as it is today. The student will have the opportunity to work with a teacher in a current classroom situation and thus will become acquainted with actual classrooms. Second, Field Experience serves a gate keeping function. Field Experience students will complete an application to teacher education as a part of the Field Experience course. Entrance requirements can be found on the admission to program found in the syllabus.

A student must satisfactorily complete 70 field hours to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and to continue taking Education courses.

C-BASE Examination:

The state of Iowa requires teacher education candidates to pass a general skills examination before they are admitted to a teacher education program.  St. Ambrose allows students who fail the C-BASE during the Field Experience semester to continue in education courses for one additional semester on a conditional basis.  At the end of those two semesters, failure to pass C-BASE will result in a denial of admission to the teacher education program.  NOTE – This means even though students may have completed one year of courses, and may have even applied to student teach, they are not guaranteed admission to the program.

Before gaining full admission to the St. Ambrose Teacher Education Program, students must pass all sections of the English and mathematics portion of the College Basic Academics Subjects Examination (C-BASE).  The following information is provided regarding the C-BASE.
