Education Courses Required for Licensure
Secondary Education
A secondary teaching license in Iowa allows the license holder to
teach in grades 7th through 12th. Each secondary license also includes an endorsement
teaching area. For example, an individual may hold a secondary license with an endorsement
to teach mathematics.
The primary advisor for a student in secondary education is a
faculty member in that student's major--such as history or mathematics. Faculty
members of the Education Department serve as supplemental advisors. A list
of secondary education faculty co-advisors and their major field(s) is
provided:

Education Courses Necessary to Obtain a
Secondary License for 2003 - 2005
To obtain a secondary license students must
complete the required courses in their major field plus those courses
listed below. Course requirements are subject to change upon
mandates by the Iowa Department of Education.
One course in US History or US Government
EDUC 300 Diversity and Culturally-Responsive Teaching - 3 credits
(Prerequisites: EDUC 205 or EDUC 207; EDUC
284; admission to Teacher Education Program)
SPED 310 Inclusive Strategies for Students with Special Needs - 3
credits 25 field hours
(Prerequisites: EDUC 205 or EDUC 207; EDUC
284; admission to Teacher Education Program)
EDUC 205 Field Experience - 2 credits 70 field hours or EDUC 207
Orientation to Teaching - 1 credit
WI-EDUC 301 History and Philosophy of Education - 3 credits
(Prerequisites: EDUC 205 or EDUC 207;
sophomore status; ENGL 101 with a C or better)
EDUC 284 Child and Adolescent Psychology - 3 credits
(Prerequisite: PSYC 105)
EDUC 305 Special Secondary Methods - 3 credits 50 field hours
(Department methods of art, music
and physical education are accepted in
place of this course.)
(Prerequisites: EDUC 205 or EDUC 207; EDUC
284; EDUC 309 or concurrent enrollment in 309)
EDUC 308 Education Technology - 2 credits (music does not take)
(Prerequisites: sophomore status; EDUC 205 or
EDUC 207)
EDUC 309 Educational Psychology: Tests and Measurements - 3 credits
(Prerequisites: EDUC 205 or EDUC 207; EDUC
284; admission to Teacher Education Program)
EDUC 336 Content Reading - 3 credits 50 field hours or project (art,
math, music and physical
education do not take this course unless seeking an
additional endorsement area)

Take one 340s course - does not apply to art, math, music or physical education

EDUC 341 Teaching History and Social Sciences in
the Secondary School - 1 credit
EDUC 342 Teaching Business in the Secondary
School - 1 credit
EDUC 343 Teaching Science in the Secondary School
- 1 credit
EDUC 344 Teaching Foreign Language in the
Secondary School - 1 credit
EDUC 345 Teaching Speech and Theater in the
Secondary School - 1 credit
EDUC 346 Teaching Psychology / Sociology in the
Secondary School - 1 credit

EDUC 419 Observation and Student Teaching:
Secondary Grades - 12-15 credits
(Prerequisites:
Admission to Teacher Education Program; senior standing; all requirements
in
secondary education; major, minor areas;
recommendation of chair from the major, minor, and
Secondary Education departments.)
EDUC 430 Observation and Student Teaching: Art -
12-15 credits
(Prerequisites:
Admission to Teacher Education Program; senior standing;
all requirements in art
education; recommendation of the Art and Secondary
Education Department chairs.)
EDUC 432 Observation and Student Teaching: Music
- 12-15 credits
(Prerequisites:
Admission to Teacher Education Program; senior standing;
all requirements in music
education; recommendation of the Music and Secondary
Education Department chairs.)
EDUC 433 Observation and Student Teaching:
Physical Education - 12-15 credits
(Prerequisites:
Admission to Teacher Education Program; senior standing;
all requirements in
physical education; recommendation of the
Physical Education and Secondary Education
Department chairs.)
Optional courses - necessary if
seeking Illinois middle school endorsement (not required for art, music,
physical education). These two courses, plus general education course work
required for Iowa general education endorsement.
EDUC 455 Middle
School Psychology - 3 credits
(Prerequisites: EDUC
205 or EDUC 207; EDUC 284; EDUC 309 or concurrent enrollment in 309)
EDUC 461 The Middle School - 3 credits
(Prerequisites: EDUC
205 or EDUC 207; EDUC 284)
