Hanzelka July 14, 1997 Married for two years Watching T-V In our living room Late on an autumn night Small, somewhat old cottage Supported by A basement On the dark side of unfinished Suddenly! Noises from below! A depraved, rabid animal? Possibly more? About to climb the stairs? Gloves, layers of clothes, Head covering against The horror--- Baseball bats in hand Open the Basement door Stomp slowly, loudly Down the stairs Two hideous Screeching Two-leggeds descending, On the prowl Mad scramble of small feet Flapping of top-hinged Unhooked basement window Silence Whatever four-legged Once-trapped creature Hearing stomps and screeches Had fled Jumping Terror stricken Against the window Until it flapped up and open
Likely still running After thirty plus years As we watch T-V Still on the alert for other
