Why major or minor in English?
English serves as the route to careers in teaching or to graduate studies, but it also offers a solid preparation for a variety of careers in areas such as government, business, publishing and law. English programs at St. Ambrose offer students:

  • an innovative curriculum
  • class sizes that allow each student to voice in discussion
  • faculty mentors who are available and committed to their students, who know and are known by their students

What kinds of major and minor programs are available?
English major (often accompanying a second major in another field); English Education major; English minor; Writing minor

What kinds of courses does a major or minor take?
Literature: Along with the traditional genres and periods, students explore new directions in literary studies such as science fiction and the works of West Indian, Canadian, and ethnic American writers.

Writing: Students are prepared for the professional world through business and technical writing courses; they pursue writing as an expressive medium in courses such as expository writing workshops and creative writing.

What else besides courses does St. Ambrose offer English majors and minors?
Engaged in many activities across campus, English students also:
