General Education

What is General Education?

Students completing the General Education program at St. Ambrose will have demonstrated 22 learning outcomes that emphasize the Liberal Arts, the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Critical Reasoning, Health and Wellness, Communication, and Integrated Learning. Students demonstrate attainment of these outcomes through a variety of courses, co-curricular programs, and other experiential learning opportunities.
Additionally, by completing the program, students will have learned content in the arts and sciences, philosophy and theology; and developed and honed skills as life-long learners equipped with quantitative and critical thinking, written and oral expression, an ethos of service, a sense of tradition, and freedom of inquiry.

We believe that an Ambrosian education will prepare students, not only for the first job, but for whatever challenges and opportunities this new century offers.

Why These Outcomes?

In addition to the education students receive in a degree program (the major) they will be liberally educated persons. This means the ability to think clearly and critically, know how to solve problems, being comfortable serving the needs of family, community, nation, and the earth.

Students will make connections across and among diverse academic disciplines, including experiential learning. Students will enrich their own lives precisely to the extent that they invest in enriching the lives of others: intellectually, spiritually, ethically, socially, artistically, and physically.
