Emergency/Urgent Care Plan
The following course of
action is a guide to assist someone confronted with someone
needing medical attention
Emergency Care Plan
An emergency situation is life threatening and calls for
immediate intervention by medical personnel.
Situations which warrant immediate intervention are:
- Unconsciousness
or altered level of consciousness
- Absence
of or impaired respirations
- Absence
of pulse
- Persistent
chest or abdominal pain or pressure
- Seizures,
severe headache, slurred speech, visual changes,
weakness
- Uncontrolled
bleeding
- Poisoning
or suspected poisoning
- Severe
burns
- Vomiting
blood
- Pain,
altered alignment or inability to move a body part or
extremity
Course of Action
-
Dial 911 (or 9-911)
which will automatically ring the
security desk. Be
prepared to inform the guard of the nature of the
emergency, the exact location of the victim, your name
and extension and don’t hang up until advised it is
all right to do so. The guard will dial 911 and meet the ambulance
upon arrival to campus and direct the paramedics to
individual(s) in need of medical care.

Dial 6423 to notify
the Health Service of emergency. The Director will come to the location and offer assistance
to the individual(s) until the paramedics arrive. If the Director of Health Services is
unavailable, please leave a message so that the Director
can follow up with the patient, family, medical and
department personnel.

Report the emergency
and actions taken to the appropriate person (i.e.
supervisor or department head) in the department. This individual will need to complete the
incident report and send it to the Director of Health
Services.

Collect patient’s
personal belongings for safe keeping.

Do not administer
first aid or CPR unless indicated, you have
certification and medical personnel not available.

The Poison Control
Center can be reached by contacting the nearest
emergency room or directly at 1-800-222-1222 at all
times.

The Director of
Health Services and hospital personnel will notify
patient’s family of incident with course of action.
Urgent Care Plan
An urgent situation is not life-threatening, but does
require some immediate attention.
Examples of urgent care situations are:
- Laceration
or puncture wounds
- Pain,
swelling, or discoloration of body part
- Alteration
in color, sensation or movement of body part
- Actual
or suspected presence of foreign body
- Blood
present in vomit, urine or feces
- Mild
burns
- Other
situations where there is concern or confusion as to
level of care indicated
Course of Action

Dial 6423 to notify
the Health Service of situation. If able, the injured person(s) may be sent to the
Health Service. Otherwise,
the director will come to the location to assess the
situation and intervene with appropriate response. If the Director is unavailable, please leave a
message so that the Director can follow up with patient,
family, medical and department personnel.

Residential students
will be referred to the Davenport clinic for care. The Davenport Clinic is located at 1820 West
Third Street in Davenport, Iowa.
Their phone number is 326-1661.

Nonresidential
students have the choice of going to the Davenport
Clinic (for a reduced price fee), express care,
emergency room or private physician at their own
expense.

All workman
compensation cases will be referred to Genesis Occupational Health.

Report the incident
with actions taken to the appropriate person in the
department. This
individual will need to complete an incident report and
send it to the Health Service.
