Meningitis
There are 5 predominant strains of Meningitis (A,B,C,Y and
W-135). Groups A,C,Y and W-135 account for most cases of
Meningitis on college campuses in the U.S. and there is a
vaccine available to protect against these groups. However,
it is important to know
that there have been cases of Meningitis occurring in
Iowa due to group B which is not present in
the vaccine. Individuals are still at risk for illness due to
this group in spite of vaccination.
To help reduce your risk of infection in
addition to vaccination, remember basic principles of proper
hygiene. Wash
hands frequently; avoid or limit contact with persons who are
ill; don't
share eating utensils, lip balm or cigarettes; cover your nose and mouth
when coughing or sneezing; and use disposable tissues.
Not all private offices and county health departments provide the Meningococcal vaccine. If you desire and are
unable to obtain this vaccine through a health care provider
in your area, the Office of Health Services will host a
meningitis clinic during Welcome Week. You may contact the
Office of Health Services at 563/333-6423 for more
information.
For more information on Meningococcal disease and
vaccination, visit the websites below provided by the Center
for Disease Control or stop by the Health
Service office.
