Why I am an IE

Why I am a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)

Proper operation of an organization can only be achieved by recognition of its purpose and all the interests involved in the organization. Further, all the interests must be provided for in the structure and rules that govern the operation of the organization.

IE is really a philosophy, many parts (pieces) of the wisdom can be practiced individually. Over the years, organizations have been created that concentrate on one or a few of these pieces (e.g. production control, quality, ergonomics). However, to become a "master of the philosophy" one must study and practice all aspects, and this takes much effort and many years. I believe this IE perspective (philosophy) is the most effective (perhaps only) method of designing the operation of an organization to achieve the purpose stated in the first paragraph. In addition, the proper operation of an organization can be achieved most economically through the application of fundamental IE principles.

IIE is the only existing body of engineering professionals that recognizes and supports the IE philosophy. No other organization recognizes and supports this broad perspective of organization operation. We are not like the other disciplines, we cannot be. Our products are so complex and massive it is difficult to "see" them operate and appreciate the good work that has been accomplished. An engineering organization with the purpose of supporting the IE philosophy is mandatory for the continued progress of humankind.  IIE needs to be supported in order to further my beliefs. It needs to be strengthened in order to carry on my beliefs.
