Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook

Minutes

Meeting of November 25, 2003

Present:  George Bailey, Ann Preston , Randy Richards (chair), Theresa Schlabach Jon Stauff.

Not Present:  Nathan Schlueter

As the Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook approaches concludes its third semester of work, it reviewed its charge and process.  In accord with the recommendations of the handbook task force, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook began its work with review and rationalization of committee policies and procedures, will progress to the remainder of Section 2.0, and will conclude its work with review of material, such as the use of photocopiers, that might more appropriately find a place in an employee orientation manual.

Proposed amendments to the PTS and FDC have been presented to the Faculty Assembly.

The Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook identified the following draft recommendations as ready to forward to the Faculty Assembly for first reading at the February meeting of the Faculty Assembly:

            Policy on Military Leave

            Recommendations on Educational Policies Committee

Recommendations on role of Faculty Finance Committee on establishing and discontinuing programs

Proposal on composition of Faculty Finance Committee to mandate members with specific knowledge of accounting and finance

The Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook identified several discussion items to be communicated to Faculty Assembly members via email in advance of a forum for faculty feedback.  The forum is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2004, in Ambrose 231.  Those discussion items are:

Definition of governance and university committees

Release time for undergraduate faculty research and/or governance duties

Presentation of proposals on these issues to the Faculty Assembly will conclude the Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook work on committee policies and procedures, enabling the Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook to move to the remainder of Section 2.0

As the Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook’s focus shifts, its composition and leadership will also shift.  Jon Stauff has replaced Allison Ambrose, and a replacement for Nathan Schlueter, who has resigned from the Committee, will be recruited.  Randy Richards resigned the chair.  The Ad Hoc Committee on the Handbook thanked Randy for the considerable time, effort and expertise that he brings to the Committee’s deliberations.   Jon Stauff was elected by acclaim to chair the committee as it moves to the next phase of its work.

Respectfully submitted

Ann E. Preston
