SAU Faculty Handbook Committee, 2003-2004

Bachelor of Elected Studies Committee

After consultation with Dr. Hope Gardina, Dean of the College for Professional Studies and consideration of recent practice, we would like to propose that the Bachelor of Elected Studies Committee be eliminated from the list of standing committees of the Faculty Assembly.

This degree program is subject to review by the Educational Policies Committee.  Thus, we have found the BES Committee to be redundant.

The Faculty Assembly discussed the proposal to disband the BES Committee on March 18, 2004.  Several faculty members raised concerns that there would be no faculty oversight of the BES programs of individual students.  To elaborate, the Handbook Committee did not seek to reduce faculty oversight of the individual degree programs. We simply felt that this task did not fit the Assembly's role as an organ of shared governance.  We found the approval of BES degree programs to be an administrative task, and our goal was to ask the Academic Vice President and the deans to determine a process by which faculty were selected to review BES programs.

A motion was made to this effect during the March 2004 Faculty Assembly, and this motion was approved.  A second reading of the motion will take place in April 2004.  Thanks to our colleagues for their assistance.
