SAU Faculty Handbook Committee, 2003-2004

Part-Time/Adjunct Faculty Issues

The Handbook Committee acknowledges that its work will not be completed after the review of standing committees of the Faculty Assembly.  Since St. Ambrose attained University status in 1987, the number of people teaching for us in a part-time capacity has grown, and the ways they work for us in that part-time capacity are varied.  We have adjunct faculty on campus, ACCEL facilitators, and part-time salaried faculty in a number of departments.  As far as part-time instructional employment goes, our present handbook may not reflect our current practices.

The SAU chapter of AAUP has begun to address the issue of part-time employment on campus, and the chair of the Handbook Committee has consulted the ACCEL program and the Academic Director of the MBA program to gain some insight into their perspectives about part-time employees and the Faculty Handbook.  It became clear that there is enough interest in this subject to warrant more discussion among the various parties.

Jon Stauff, chair of the Handbook Committee, has asked Allison Ambrose, a Handbook Committee member and Academic Director of the MBA program, to convene a group of colleagues, including representation from the SAU chapter of AAUP, to meet and determine some of the issues the Handbook Committee might address after its review of Section 2 of the Handbook is complete.  Allison will report back to the Handbook Committee, and we will post this information here for faculty review.

Please contact Allison Ambrose for more information about this aspect of the Committee's work.  Thank you.
