The Alpha Zeta Omega chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society for History, was founded in 1994. Students with a 3.1 GPA in 12 credits of history may be eligible to join Phi Alpha Theta (provided they are able to meet additional academic requirements).
Phi Alpha Theta sponsors guest speakers, sends representatives to regional and national conferences, provides students an opportunity to present research to their peers at student paper conferences, and introduces students to professional opportunities in history. Members of Phi Alpha Theta have interned recently at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and the Putnam Museum of History and Science, and several members have begun graduate studies in history, political science, and anthropology.
The St. Ambrose chapter of Phi Alpha Theta also performs an annual service project in conjunction with the State History Day in Iowa competition. Members help with preparations for the local district competition and serve as judges during the district competition. This year a number of students will be working with area teachers and schoolchildren to help them prepare for History Day.
