Facilities - IE Computer Lab

Students working in the IE lab

Overview
The IE Lab computers are to be used by IE students unless you have obtained special permission from the IE Faculty.

Color Printing
Color printing is available to all IE students.  Please use this resource carefully.  Students who overuse the color printer may lose this privilege.

Using the Color Printer

  • Use the Phaser 8200 only for final drafts.
  • Use the HP 4250 Laser for most print jobs and for "edit quality" reports.
  • Do not use the Phaser 8200 for non-engineering print jobs.
  • The Phaser 8200 is currently available to all IE students.

Using the Computers

  • For security, ONLY Industrial Engineering students and students enrolled in IE courses (and specified MATH and ENGR courses) have access to the IE Computer Lab machines.  Other students will not be able to log on to these machines!  If you are not an IE student and need to access the IE Computer Lab machines, please contact the IE Department chair.
  • After turning the power on, the computer will prompt you for an user name, password and log on to.  Enter your student user name (eg., mo0098765) and your password.  Choose to log on to AMBROSE (if prompted) to access the university network, and your student space on the university server.

  • When done, please log off of your student account.  If you are the last student in the lab, you may shut the machine down using the shut down option in the logoff menu.

  • If the network appears not to be working you may log on to a computer locally. this will provide access to software, but not to student accounts (where your files may be located).  To login locally, you must obtain a username form an IE professor and Log on to: SAUIE-0# (where # identifies the machine number).  The password is also the user name to log on locally.

  • Do not save anything to the local drive or install software.  When working on a computer, save to your network space, a floppy or CD-R.  The computers are  re-imaged at the end of the semester and all saved files are removed.

  • All computers are set up to use the HP LaserJet printer by default.  You may print with the color jet printer only from the SAUIE-09 computer (the one closest to the color printer).

  • You have space on the university server for your work. You may wish to backup your data to floppy. Use copy, xcopy, or MS Backup.  Anything saved on the local drive (usually drive C:) may be erased at anytime for administrative purposes- do not save files to the local drive without backing them up elsewhere.

  • Drive Z: can be accessed from any computer on campus by connecting to the university network.

  • The scanner, when needed, should be turned on before the computer (SAUIE-04) for the scanner to be recognized and work.  The scanner will only operate with the SAUIE-04 machine.

  • If you have problems, Please make note of the application, what files were involved, the computer, the domain (AMBROSE or SAUIE-0#), and other applications running at the time.  Contact your course professor or professor Opar to investigate.

Be courteous of other student's needs and do not dominate any lab resource or use the resources for personal tasks when others need to complete their assignments!

If you have any questions, please see professors Hill or Opar.
